Why International Vulture Awareness Day matters and how you can celebrate

IVAD 2025

Every year, on the first Saturday of September, people around the world take a moment to recognise a group of birds that rarely gets the appreciation it deserves: vultures.

International Vulture Awareness Day (IVAD) is more than a date—it’s a chance to rethink how we view these misunderstood creatures and to help protect them before it’s too late.

Whether you are deep into vulture conservation or just curious about why these birds matter, IVAD is a moment to join others in standing up for one of nature’s most essential (and often overlooked) animals.

So… why celebrate vultures?

Vultures do a job no one else wants. As nature’s clean-up crew, they help:

  • Likely to prevent disease from spreading by eating animal remains that could otherwise rot and infect ecosystems.
  • Keep ecosystems healthy by recycling nutrients and balancing wildlife populations.
  • Save money for farmers and communities by reducing the need to dispose of livestock carcasses.
  • Limit climate impact by avoiding more emissions-heavy disposal methods like burning or burying.

But here’s the hard truth: nearly 70% of vulture species are threatened—and many are sliding toward extinction. Poisoning, illegal killing, electrocution, collision and food shortage are pushing them closer to the edge of extinction.

What is IVAD all about?

IVAD was started back in 2006 with a simple mission: shift how people see vultures and push for global conservation. It’s now recognised in around the world, with support from groups like the Endangered Wildlife Trust, the Hawk Conservancy Trust, and the Vulture Conservation Foundation (VCF).

The goals?

  • Bust harmful myths.
  • Teach about the importance of vultures.
  • Bring real support to conservation efforts.
  • And, yes—celebrate these brilliant, fascinating birds.

Each year, IVAD brings together scientists, teachers, students, and wildlife lovers through local events, online campaigns and community activities.

Simple ways to celebrate IVAD 2025

You don’t need a science degree to help vultures. Here’s how you can get involved this year:

1. Attend or organise an event

Join a local IVAD activity or host one. That could be a birdwatching walk, a school talk, an art show, or even a small conservation workshop.

You can register your event on the IVAD website to be part of the global action map. Events can run until October.

2. Spread the Word

Social media can go a long way. Use the IVAD’s social media toolkit to share facts, graphics, or photos. Post a fun vulture fact, a short video, or even a selfie with your favourite vulture-themed gear. Challenge friends to learn one new thing about vultures.

3. Teach and Inspire

Host a trivia night. Create a vulture-themed classroom session. Encourage local schools to weave vulture conservation into their environmental lessons.

IVAD has tons of resources: crafts, games, fact sheets—you name it.

4. Support real-world conservation

Why your participation is important

Vultures don’t usually steal the spotlight, but their role in our world is huge. Without them, ecosystems suffer. Disease risks rise. The natural balance starts to break.

IVAD is a reminder that we all have a role to play—whether it’s learning more, speaking up, teaching others, or just showing up.

These birds have been quietly protecting us for generations. It’s time we return the favour.
