Every year, they make a round trip of around 7,000km from their breeding areas in Europe to their winter grounds in sub-Saharan Africa. So far, two of the GPS tagged&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/life-projects\/rupis\/\">LIFE Rupis<\/a>&nbsp;vultures have begun their migration journey &#8211; Britango and Faia.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Britango<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Britango left the territory in the Douro canyon where it fledged and started moving south on 27 August. Britango first flew to the west, having a look at Sagres but luckily got back on track, found Gibraltar and we were so happy to see that the vulture crossed the Strait of Gibraltar and reached Morocco successfully. The crossing of the strait took it only 26 minutes! Before crossing, it used a thermal wind to gain altitude and reached a height 2329 meters above sea level. This allowed it to then sail across the strait and reaching Morocco at an altitude of 1107 meters above sea level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Watch the 3D animation of the crossing<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ayvri.com\/scene\/z85q860p54\/ck054meaj00013965ep0bs225\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Watch<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is now making its way south, passing through Algeria and Mauritania, over the Sahara desert. The phone reception is working only in certain areas and hence we receive GPS locations irregularly. Will it make it? And spend the winter in the same areas as the other birds from the Douro canyon? We&#8217;ll have to wait and see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Faia<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image-51.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12373\" width=\"616\" height=\"1096\" srcset=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image-51.jpg 304w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image-51-169x300.jpg 169w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 616px) 100vw, 616px\" \/><figcaption>Faia ahead of her release back to the wild in 2017 (c) VCF<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Faia is a female Egyptian Vulture that was captured at the Escalh\u00e3o supplementary feeding site in June 2017, and bred successfully in the \u00c1gueda valley, on the Spanish side of the international river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Faia had left the Douro canyon on 6 September. She flew over the\u00a0Strait of Gibraltar to Morocco on 9 September , and is making good progress heading south.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image-1-42.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12374\" width=\"751\" height=\"805\" srcset=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image-1-42.jpg 401w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image-1-42-280x300.jpg 280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 751px) 100vw, 751px\" \/><figcaption>Migration route of Britango (blue) and Faia (red)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2017, she gave us quite a scare when&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/2017\/11\/17\/five-out-of-five-egyptian-vulture-faia-re-surfaced-in-mali-after-two-months\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">we lost track of her when she left Morocco and was entering Algeria, probably flying into an area with no GSM coverage in the desert<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 and we were without notice from her for over two months. Thankfully, she re-surfaced in Mali just south of the Mauritanian border. GSM coverage is fragmented in the desert and the experience that we have with the birds tagged in RUPIS is that we often are without notice for some days or a few weeks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>LIFE Rupis<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"476\" height=\"225\" src=\"http:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image-3-10.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image-3-10.jpg 476w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image-3-10-300x142.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 476px) 100vw, 476px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>La\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rupis.pt\/pt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LIFE Rupis<\/a>\u00a0conservation project, led by Portuguese wildlife organisation\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.spea.pt\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sociedade Portuguesa para o Estudo das Aves (SPEA),<\/a>\u00a0and funded by the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/environment\/life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">European Union&#8217;s LIFE Fund<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mava-foundation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MAVA Foundation<\/a>, is working in the cross-border Douro region of Spain and Portugal to protect and strengthen the populations of Egyptian vultures and Bonelli\u00b4s eagle. With around 135 breeding pairs, the region has one of the largest population of Egyptian vultures in Europe.
