The pair is part of the breeding programme of the Green Balkans&#8217; Wildlife rehabilitation and breeding centre and is supported by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/life-projects\/vultures-back-to-life\/\">Vultures Back to LIFE Project<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Cinereous Vulture breeding pair<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/greenbalkans.org\/en\/Bulgaria_received_a_precious_gift_a_black_vulture_that_will_become_a_part_of_the_species_reintroduction_programme_in_our_country_implemented_by_Green_Balkans_-p6889\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The breeding vultures were paired&nbsp;<\/a>more than a year ago when the male Keyo arrived in Bulgaria and became the partner of the female Cherna. After an inquiry among the Green Balkans&#8217; supporters,<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/greenbalkans.org\/en\/The_black_vulture_donated_to_us_from_the_Netherlands_has_a_name_-p6891\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;<\/a>the bird was named Keyo, suggested by Svilen Stamatov from the&nbsp;Bulgarian Animal Transport,&nbsp;who donated and assisted for the transportation of the bird.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/greenbalkans.org\/en\/The_pair_bond_of_the_newlywed_Black_vultures_is_getting_stronger-p7016\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/greenbalkans.org\/en\/The_pair_bond_of_the_newlywed_Black_vultures_is_getting_stronger-p7016\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the pair performed excellent courtship<\/a>, but they never copulated, and as a result, the female&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/greenbalkans.org\/en\/First_egg_of_the_new_Black_vultures_pair_in_the_Wildlife_rehabilitation_and_breeding_center_-p7021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">laid an unfertilised egg.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This season they initiated nest building in December and recently they started copulating, which is a significant progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Watch the pair courting\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Black vultures finally copulating in Bulgaria again!\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/krO829GK664?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Reintroducing the Cinereous Vulture to Bulgaria<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s hope that their efforts are successful as this outcome will also contribute to the efforts of the Vultures Back To LIFE project to bring the Cinereous Vulture as a breeding species in Bulgaria. It is also likely that Cinereous Vultures will start nesting in the wild again since two of the birds released in 2019 \u2013 Balkan and VCF Know How \u2013 were observed courting by the project&#8217;s field assistants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Special thanks go to Marleen Hugh, coordinator of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/our-work\/captive-breeding\/black-vulture\/\">European endangered species program for the Black vulture (EBV EEP)<\/a>&nbsp;for providing the male vulture to the Centre and for her advice for the Cinereous Vulture breeding methodology.
