Primarily, in 2021, the project team will further combat wildlife poisoning, improve food availability, reinforce the vulture population and carry out educational activities in local communities if COVID-19 measures allow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>TACKLING THREATS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Combating illegal wildlife poisoning<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/image-1-14.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15287\" width=\"1034\" height=\"582\" srcset=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/image-1-14.jpg 670w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/image-1-14-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1034px) 100vw, 1034px\" \/><figcaption>Poisoned Griffon Vulture in Cyprus (c) Game and Fauna Service<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, the project team will reinforce the efforts to fight illegal wildlife poisoning in Cyprus by developing standard procedures for responding to poisoning incidents, creating a National Action Plan Against Poisoning, educating and training relevant stakeholders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project will build capacities among relevant personnel of governmental institutions to improve management of poisoning incidents by participation in the Wildlife Crime Academy in Spain,&nbsp;organized by the Vulture Conservation Foundation (VCF) and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.juntadeandalucia.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Junta de Andaluc\u00eda<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Improving food availability<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2021, the project team will establish an additional supplementary feeding station for vultures, prepare proposals to adjust the supplementary feeding supply according to the sanitary regulations as&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Minimizing the risk of collision<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After identifying the most dangerous and high-risk overhead power transmission lines to vultures, the project team alongside authorities will fit the lines with anti-collision markers to reduce the risk of collision.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>RESTOCKING VULTURE POPULATION<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end of 2021, the first import of twelve wild Griffon Vultures coming from rehabilitation centres in Spain is also planned to strengthen the local population. The Game and Fauna service is responsible for this action. At the same time, the VCF with many years of experience in vulture reintroduction projects in Europe will coordinate the necessary procedures in Spain with the support of&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.juntaex.es\/web\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Junta de Extremadura<\/a>&nbsp;y&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amus.org.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AMUS<\/a>. The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/new-study-estimates-the-extinction-risk-for-cyprus-griffon-vultures-and-identifies-priority-actions-for-their-conservation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Population&nbsp;Viability Analysis study confirmed the need to import vultures<\/a>&nbsp;for their eventual release to the wild. Ahead of their release, the project team will equip the Griffon Vultures with GPS tags to continually monitor their movements.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>AWARENESS AND EDUCATION<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Undoubtedly, education and awareness among local communities plays an important part in preserving Griffon Vultures in Cyprus. In this four-year endeavor (2019-2023),\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/birdlifecyprus.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BirdLife Cyprus<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.moi.gov.cy\/moi\/wildlife\/wildlife_new.nsf\/index_gr\/index_gr?opendocument\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Game and Fauna Service<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.terracypria.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Terra Cypria \u2013 The Cyprus Conservation Foundation<\/a>\u00a0and the Vulture Conservation Foundation have joined forces to tackle the main threats facing the Griffon Vulture and prevent Cyprus\u2019 most threatened bird of prey from going extinct.
