A third chick hatched in the Western Balkan Mountains, and there is still hope for a fourth chick to hatch in the same colony.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The breeding period for Cinereous Vultures is quite long. Each season, the pair lays only one egg between February and March, and it takes about 55-60 days of incubation until the offspring hatches. Once a common sight in several European countries, poisoning incidents, direct persecution and habitat loss led to its extinction in many countries. By the end of the 20th century, the last wild colonies got confined to Spain, in the west, and to the <a href=\"https:\/\/dadia-np.gr\/?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dadia-Lefkimi-Soufli Forest National Park<\/a> in Greece, which held the <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/the-only-remaining-cinereous-vulture-breeding-colony-in-the-balkans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">last remaining population in the Balkans<\/a> for many years.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although some individuals from the Greek population could be seen flying over Bulgaria every year, there were no records of Cinereous Vultures breeding in the country or any other Balkan state for decades. The species became locally extinct in 1985, and a single pair was recorded in 1993 in the Eastern Rhodope Mountains but disappeared after the breeding season.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Securing the Future of Cinereous Vultures in the Balkan Mountains, Bulgaria\u00a0\u00a0<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>To restore the Cinereous Vulture population in Bulgaria, organisations working at the national level, the <a href=\"https:\/\/greenbalkans.org\/\">Green Balkans<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fwff.org\/\">FWFF<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rspb.org.uk\/our-work\/policy-insight\/species\/birds-of-prey-in-the-uk\/why-should-we-protect-birds-of-prey\/\">Birds of Prey Protection Society<\/a> and the Nature parks \u201cVrachanski Balkan\u201d and \u201cSinite Kamani\u201d have joined forces with international organisations such as the Vulture Conservation Foundation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.googleadservices.com\/pagead\/aclk?sa=L&amp;ai=DChcSEwjZwN6bz_D-AhX1_dUKHerqBuUYABAAGgJ3cw&amp;ohost=www.google.com&amp;cid=CAESbeD22NZmYC4oS-5DkVbUtnQ0o23gYU-aYHk8LdQcDLRrLcb0-nI55DYXb-JcvBSu9lL8EI2R6Heec2lEKMDA7Sa00l1fdThWuL65TAdt2As5lF328eCNJc9AKKn6qxEnQ2qk8wjsVwQaveh2tXI&amp;sig=AOD64_1vA6G0lPRcOtcqsH4kHjIBX8Efvw&amp;q&amp;adurl&amp;ved=2ahUKEwiu89Wbz_D-AhU_RaQEHZx3BdYQ0Qx6BAgIEAE\">Euronatur<\/a> y <a href=\"https:\/\/www.juntaex.es\/\">Junta de Extremadura<\/a>. With the <a href=\"https:\/\/greenbalkans.org\/VulturesBack\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vultures Back to LIFE<\/a> project funded by the EU\u2019s LIFE programme, the first three Cinereous Vultures were released in 2018 in the Balkan Mountains, and by the end of the project, in 2022, over <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/back-from-extinction-first-results-from-the-cinereous-vulture-reintroduction-and-release-programme-in-bulgaria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">70 birds would have been released<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"770\" src=\"http:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/298368565_5348953258522101_770234741237724582_n-1024x770.jpeg\" alt=\"Last Cinereous Vultures released in Bulgaria \u00a9 FWFF\" class=\"wp-image-25092\" srcset=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/298368565_5348953258522101_770234741237724582_n-1024x770.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/298368565_5348953258522101_770234741237724582_n-300x226.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/298368565_5348953258522101_770234741237724582_n-768x578.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/298368565_5348953258522101_770234741237724582_n-16x12.jpeg 16w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/298368565_5348953258522101_770234741237724582_n.jpeg 1258w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Last Cinereous Vultures released in Bulgaria \u00a9 FWFF<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end of 2020, two released Cinereous Vultures formed pair and <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/breaking-news-cinereous-vultures-are-breeding-again-in-bulgarias-wild-years-after-their-extinction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">successfully hatched a chick in the wild in 2021.<\/a> This was the first Cinereous Vulture hatching in the Balkan Mountains (Stara Planina) in 60-70 years and the first in Bulgaria in nearly three decades. In December 2021, the project team rejoiced when another <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/reintroduced-cinereous-vulture-kutelka-performs-impressive-travels-and-finds-a-partner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">two released birds formed pair<\/a>, beginning their attempts to start a family in the Western Balkan Mountains. In 2022, the number of hatchlings rose to two as a <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/successfully-marking-the-second-wild-hatched-cinereous-vulture-in-bulgaria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">chick hatched in the Western Balkan Mountains<\/a> for the first time.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Across the Balkan Mountains, estimations indicate that 11-13 pairs have been formed, thanks to the releases in different sites in the framework of the <a href=\"https:\/\/greenbalkans.org\/VulturesBack\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vultures Back to LIFE<\/a> project.
