The innovative system will be installed following the recent fatal collisions of a white-tailed eagle and a <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/bearded-vulture-dies-after-colliding-with-wind-turbine-in-the-netherlands\/\">Bearded Vulture<\/a> (<em>Gypaetus Barbatus<\/em>) in one of the 83 wind turbines of the park. With a growing number of pairs of eagles breeding near the wind farm, the system is meant to prevent further collisions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Wind-Turbines-Zeeland-Netherlands-.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-36222\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Wind Turbines, Wind Park Zeeland, Netherlands \u00a9 Adobe Stock\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Preventing bird collisions with wind turbines<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, collisions with wind turbines are one of the leading causes of vulture mortality in Europe, affecting several bird species and bats equally. A collision is often fatal or cuts part of the bird\u2019s body, leading it to a fate in captivity, unable to return to the wild. In the Netherlands, after the deadly collision of a sea eagle, the social controversy prompted the company to adopt a system to prevent further incidents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Windpark Zeewolde, 28 white-tailed eagle nests were built this season in Oostvaarderslplassen, close to the windpark. Forty-five hatchlings successfully joined the population, which has been facing a positive growth trend in recent years. The system will be able to locate sea eagles flying at a distance of 1100 meters and follow the bird until it is out of the dangerous area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>When the cameras detect a sea eagle approaching 300 meters or less, the nearby turbines will automatically shut down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<cite>Windpark Zeewolde<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The cameras were designed specifically to detect white-tailed eagles, as they tend to soar the land from above before diving deep in a hunt. The system also includes a horn, but it is ineffective in keeping them away from the dangerous wind turbines. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/windparkzeewolde.nl\/ruim-baan-voor-zeearend-door-slimme-cameras-in-windpark\/\">Windpark Zeewolde<\/a>, \u201cseveral million euros are being invested\u201d in piloting this innovative detection system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bearded Vulture Roc lost its life in the Windpark Zeewolde this summer<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, in June this year, the remains of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/vultures\/bearded-vulture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bearded Vulture<\/a>\u00a0Roc were found under a wind turbine. Roc was a young captive-bred vulture\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/the-first-bearded-vulture-releases-of-2022-already-took-place\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">released in the<\/a><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/the-first-bearded-vulture-releases-of-2022-already-took-place\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Grands Causses (Southern France)<\/a>\u00a0in 2022. Tragically, he met his end after a collision with a wind turbine in Zeewolde. The incident joined the growing social discussions around the death of sea eagles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Although too late for Roc and the white-tailed eagle, this is good news and a major breakthrough in the Netherlands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<cite>Said Hans Pohlmann, as VCF President and dutch citizen<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2021, another <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/necropsy-results-shed-light-on-the-first-bearded-vulture-fatality-caused-by-wind-turbine-collision-in-europe\/\">Bearded Vulture fatally collided<\/a> with a wind turbine in Noord-Holland in the Netherlands. In that same year, <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/on-a-collision-course-16-griffon-vultures-killed-by-wind-turbines-in-aragon-spain\/\">16 Griffon Vultures lost their lives<\/a> in Aragon, Spain, for the same reason. In Greece this year, a <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/one-more-cinereous-vulture-collides-with-wind-turbine-in-thrace-greece-highlighting-growing-concerns\/\">Cinereous Vulture got its wing cut off<\/a> after colliding with a wind turbine, and <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/adult-cinereous-vulture-fatally-collides-with-a-wind-turbine-in-the-rhodopes\/\">another lost its life<\/a> in the Greek Rhodopes in 2022. Most of the birds found dead carry GPS transmitters, <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/our-work\/monitoring\/\">under several monitoring projects<\/a> ongoing in Europe. These alternatives, however, often pose a severe threat to many bird species. According to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cms.int\/raptors\/sites\/default\/files\/publication\/vulture-msap_summary_e.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Multi-Species Action Plan for the Conservation of African-Eurasian Vultures<\/a>, despite their\u2019 acute vision, their head position when foraging makes them unaware of obstructions and particularly vulnerable to colliding with wind turbines and powerlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The VCF and partners have been engaging with a number of researchers and also with energy operators to provide data about the occurrence of vulture species, to try to prevent the establishment of wind farms in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/habitat-modelling-helps-assess-risk-of-wind-farms-for-bearded-vultures-in-the-alps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">important corridors or breeding areas<\/a>. The organisation is also involved in multiple projects funded by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/projects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EU\u2019s LIFE Programme<\/a>. In May this year, 100 participants gathered in Italy to discuss the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesafeforvultures.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LIFE Safe for Vultures<\/a>\u2018 efforts to protect Griffon Vultures (<em>Gyps fulvus<\/em>) in Sardinia and compare best practices from other regions. Although with a focus on power line collision, wind farms were also referred to, <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/best-practices-for-mitigating-electrocution-and-collision-risk-international-conference-in-sardinia\/\">conference takeaways are available here<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, the <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/european-vulture-conference\/\">European Vulture Conference<\/a>, happening between 14-17 November 2023, will provide the opportunity to share best practices and methods to mitigate collisions with wind turbines, with dedicated sessions and poster presentations. Secure your place and join us in C\u00e1ceres, Spain! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Finding solutions to prevent collisions with wind turbines<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Installing automated collision avoidance systems is important to bird areas, but only sometimes enough to prevent collisions. It is necessary to perform sensitivity <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/habitat-modelling-helps-assess-risk-of-wind-farms-for-bearded-vultures-in-the-alps\/\">mapping analysis, collision risk modelling and spatial planning<\/a> to avoid installing wind turbines in sensitive areas. A&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/ece3.6592\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> research article<\/a>&nbsp;published in 2021 proved <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/research-review-study-shows-that-painting-a-single-wind-turbine-blade-black-reduces-bird-collision\/\">that painting a single wind turbine blade black<\/a> reduces collision by 70% and is particularly effective for large birds of prey and, therefore, probably also vultures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Shut down on demand<\/strong>&nbsp;(SDOD) is the most effective way to tackle the threat, as losses in energy are negligible and pose insignificant economic loss to energy companies. It requires a&nbsp;<strong>detection system<\/strong>&nbsp;(observers, technology or hybrid) and&nbsp;<strong>shut down criteria<\/strong>, site and species-based. Technological approaches include radars, which allow night detection and cover vast areas but are expensive and cannot differentiate species.
