We can continue to give you more good news about vultures and contribute to make this a better, fairer, more diverse and more sustainable world!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"704\" src=\"http:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/VCF-Xmas-Card-2023-2-1024x704.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-36749\" srcset=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/VCF-Xmas-Card-2023-2-1024x704.png 1024w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/VCF-Xmas-Card-2023-2-300x206.png 300w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/VCF-Xmas-Card-2023-2-768x528.png 768w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/VCF-Xmas-Card-2023-2-18x12.png 18w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/VCF-Xmas-Card-2023-2.png 1251w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2023 in review: Bearded Vulture<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Our<a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/our-work\/captive-breeding\/bearded-vulture-eep\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Bearded Vulture Captive Breeding Network<\/a> has produced a <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/new-milestone-for-bearded-vulture-conservation-in-europe\/\">record 35 young Bearded Vultures<\/a>, 21 of which were released in 5<br>reintroduction projects across Europe.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bearded Vulture populations continue to do well, with another record year in the Alps, particularly in the <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/doubling-success-a-breeding-record-for-austrian-bearded-vultures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Austrian Alps,<\/a> where the population has practically doubled (9 pairs produced 8 fledglings). Also, in Italy, a <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/alpi-marittime-welcomes-a-new-bearded-vulture-fledgling-in-the-wild\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new pair settled in the Alpi Marittime <\/a>are reproduced successfully.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We have started in earnest to prepare for the coming <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/life-for-the-bearded-vulture-new-project-to-bring-the-species-back-from-extinction-in-bulgaria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bearded Vulture reintroduction in Bulgaria<\/a>, following the steps of the successful Cinereous Vulture reintroduction there.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>La <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/life-gypact-project-restoring-the-bearded-vulture-metapopulation-between-the-alps-and-the-pyrenees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LIFE project Gyp&#8217;Act<\/a> made it possible to increase the housing capacity in our specialised breeding centres at Vallcalent and Guadalentin, with the goal of ensuring the continuity of our reintroduction projects.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In October, we organised another successful <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/volunteers-needed-join-the-bearded-vulture-international-observation-days-2023-iod\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">International Observation Days <\/a>for the Bearded Vulture, the widest citizen-science initiative for the species, which counted with the participation of more than 1100 volunteers in 8 countries. <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/bearded-vulture-preliminary-results-of-the-2023-international-observation-days\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Preliminary results<\/a> are available.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>La <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/the-story-of-the-bearded-vulture-by-lizzie-daly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8220;Story of the Bearded Vulture&#8221;,<\/a> an amazing film by Lizzie Daly was launched this year, with incredible footage in our Specialised Breeding Unit at Vallcalent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/the-story-of-the-bearded-vulture-by-lizzie-daly\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"578\" src=\"http:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Story-of-the-Bearded-Vulture_film_Lizzie-Daly_-1024x578.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-36048\" srcset=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Story-of-the-Bearded-Vulture_film_Lizzie-Daly_-1024x578.png 1024w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Story-of-the-Bearded-Vulture_film_Lizzie-Daly_-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Story-of-the-Bearded-Vulture_film_Lizzie-Daly_-768x434.png 768w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Story-of-the-Bearded-Vulture_film_Lizzie-Daly_-18x10.png 18w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Story-of-the-Bearded-Vulture_film_Lizzie-Daly_.png 1372w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cinereous Vulture<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>El buitre negro (<em>Aegypius monachus<\/em>) population in Portugal <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/year-one-of-life-aegypius-return-brings-hope-for-cinereous-vulture-recovery-in-portugal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">has doubled from 40 to 80 pairs<\/a>, reflecting not only real growth but also targeted and comprehensive surveys within the <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/life-aegypius-return\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LIFE Aegypius Return project<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Also within the same project, <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/where-zimbro-and-geres-the-cinereous-vultures-released-in-portugal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">two recovered birds were released<\/a> y <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/tagging-cinereous-vultures-in-the-nest-step-by-step\/\">15 chicks were tagged,<\/a> which are now being closely monitored, providing crucial information to prevent mortality.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Aravil, a 13 years-old Cinereous Vulture who was ringed in the nest as a chick, <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/zeal-and-great-determination-the-incredible-story-of-the-first-cinereous-vultures-born-in-portugal-after-extinction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">was recaptured<\/a>. It was the first chick in Portugal, after the species return to the country in 2010! <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In cooperation with wildlife recovery centers in Portugal <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/training-police-officers-in-portugal-on-rescuing-and-handling-cinereous-vultures-life-aegypius-return\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">145 police officers and rangers were trained<\/a>, making sure any injured bird falls in capable hands.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Griffon Vulture<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Twelve Griffon Vultures were <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/seven-griffon-vultures-released-in-cyprus-to-boost-the-endangered-population-life-with-vultures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">released in Cyprus<\/a> to restock the Critically Endangered population there, and <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/cyprus-15-griffon-vultures-travelled-from-spain-to-strengthen-the-critically-endangered-local-population-life-with-vultures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">15 more were transported from Spain.<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Griffon Vulture population is <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/griffon-vulture-population-in-the-eastern-alps-is-growing-and-expanding-to-new-territories\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">expanding in the Eastern Alps,<\/a> with new breeding pairs found in Italy this year. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In January, we started a new project in Croatia (<a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/new-project-life-support\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LIFE SUPport<\/a>) led by BIOM that will enable us and our Croatian partners to enhance the Griffon population there.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"670\" src=\"http:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/G.fulvus_Bulgaria-Ivaylo-Zafirov-1024x670.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-36752\" srcset=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/G.fulvus_Bulgaria-Ivaylo-Zafirov-1024x670.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/G.fulvus_Bulgaria-Ivaylo-Zafirov-300x196.jpg 300w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/G.fulvus_Bulgaria-Ivaylo-Zafirov-768x502.jpg 768w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/G.fulvus_Bulgaria-Ivaylo-Zafirov-1536x1004.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/G.fulvus_Bulgaria-Ivaylo-Zafirov-18x12.jpg 18w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/G.fulvus_Bulgaria-Ivaylo-Zafirov.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Griffon Vultures (Gyps fulvus) in Bulgaria \u00a9 Ivaylo Zafirov<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fighting threats<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We have identified priorities and future work areas to further mitigate the <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/best-practices-for-mitigating-electrocution-and-collision-risk-international-conference-in-sardinia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">threat of electrocution <\/a>(and collision), the second most important threat affecting vultures (after poisoning). This threat will probably rank number one in the years to come.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We have organised a <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/wildlife-crime-academys-groundbreaking-training-raises-the-bar-in-wildlife-crime-prosecution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">3rd specialized training course<\/a> for our first two cohorts of trainees under the <a href=\"https:\/\/balkandetoxlife.eu\/wildlife-crime-academy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wildlife Crime Academy<\/a>, thus enhancing the capacities of dozens of people on investigating wildlife crime adequately.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inspired by the Wildlife Crime Academy, the first national <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/serbia-first-national-anti-poisoning-training-course-with-the-balkandetox-life-project\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">anti-poisoning training occurred in Serbia<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We organised a successful meeting of public prosecutors from several Balkan countries with their Spanish counterparts to discuss the crucial involvement of the judiciary in the fight against wildlife crime.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We also saw courts in Cyprus deciding on the 1st ever <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/a-first-for-cyprus-21000-euros-fine-imposed-for-illegal-wildlife-poisoning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">prosecuted case for wildlife poisoning,<\/a> a necessary step to curb this widespread illegal wildlife crime on the island.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Following the <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/eu-bans-the-use-of-lead-ammunition-in-wetlands\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EU ban on the use of lead ammunition<\/a> in and around wetlands, we&#8217;ve been supporting the transition to lead-free alternatives, working directly with <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/banning-lead-ammunition-in-portugal-life-aegypius-return\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hunters in Portugal<\/a> with the LIFE Aegypius Return project, in Croatia with the <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/new-project-life-support\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LIFE SUPport<\/a><em>,\u00a0<\/em>in Sardinia with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesafeforvultures.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LIFE Safe for Vultures<\/a><em>\u00a0<\/em>and raising awareness <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/the-weight-of-lead-and-its-dreadful-impacts-key-takeaways-of-the-national-conference-in-italy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in Italy<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Outreach<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Our communication efforts, which include several new films and <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/new-balkandetox-life-video-vividly-illustrates-the-vicious-cycle-of-illegal-wildlife-poisoning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">animations<\/a> highlighting the vital role vultures play and the threats posed by illegal wildlife poisoning, have generated over 1 million impressions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We organised a very successful <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/winners-of-the-vultures-in-focus-photography-contest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vulture in Focus &#8211; Photography Contest<\/a> with 450 amazing artworks received.
