The goal is to reestablish a self-sustaining breeding population in the Eastern Alps\u2014140 years after the species was eradicated from the region due to persecution and myth-driven fear.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 2021, two Bearded Vultures have been released annually at the same site in Berchtesgaden National Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>2021: <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/bearded-vultures-bavaria-and-wally-successfully-released-in-the-berchtesgaden-national-park-in-germany\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bavaria &amp; Wally<\/a>\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>2022: <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/bearded-vultures-released-in-the-bavarian-alps-for-the-second-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dagmar &amp; Recka<\/a>\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>2023: <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/bearded-vultures-released-in-berchtesgaden-national-park\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sisi &amp; Nepomuk<\/a>\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>2024: <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/bearded-vultures-released-in-the-bavarian-alps-for-the-fourth-year-in-a-row\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vinzenz &amp; Wiggerl<\/a>\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>2025:\u00a0 Luisa &amp; Generl\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Meet Generl&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Generl hatched on 25 February 2025 at Ostrava Zoo in Czech Republic. She is the younger of two chicks that hatched to an experienced and stable pair\u2014the older of two breeding pairs at the zoo.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For safety reasons, both of this year\u2019s eggs were removed from the nest and incubated artificially. On 10 March, Generl was transferred to <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/our-work\/reintroduction-and-restocking\/bearded-vulture-to-the-alps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Natur- und Tierpark Goldau<\/strong><\/a> in Switzerland, where she was raised by foster parents Mascha and Hans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She was named after mountaineer <strong>Eugenie \u201cGenerl\u201d Buhl<\/strong>, a native of Ramsau and widow of legendary alpinist <strong>Hermann Buhl<\/strong>, the first person to summit Nanga Parbat. Both of her parents hatched there in 2015. In 2025, the female BG 835 laid two eggs\u2014the first on 4 January (from which Luisa hatched) and the second on 11 January (which unfortunately failed to develop). The first birds were released in 1986 at Hohe Tauern National Park (Austria), and in 1997 the first breeding pair successfully raised a chick in the wild in France. This reintroduction project has sparked the imagination and gathered the support of many stakeholders across the Alpine chain and is considered one of the best wildlife comeback stories of all time!
