The BalkanDetox LIFE project made it clear: communication can be a powerful force in confronting illegal wildlife poisoning, even in difficult and sensitive environments. But success isn\u2019t just about raising visibility. It\u2019s about building trust, encouraging empathy, and linking messages to real, tangible action. Effective communication needs to be strategic \u2014 shaped by who the audience is and what their local reality looks like. It should also use emotion, using relatable stories or species to encourage human connection. It needs to be visual and clear, so that people can understand the issue quickly. And perhaps most importantly, it has to be personal \u2014 grounded in real presence, strong relationships, and steady, long-term engagement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the same time, we must remember that those who turn to poison baits often do so in response to real challenges\u2014 threats to their animals, their income, or even their safety. That doesn\u2019t excuse the act, but it means we have to meet people where they are. We need to listen, understand what matters to them, what they care about, and how our message \u2014 and our actions \u2014 can help solve problems without resorting to a crime that puts wildlife, domestic animals, and people at risk. Communication alone won\u2019t solve the problem, but without it, solutions will be much harder to reach. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The BalkanDetox LIFE project made it clear: communication can be a powerful force in confronting illegal wildlife poisoning, even in difficult and sensitive environments. But success isn\u2019t just about raising visibility. It\u2019s about building trust, encouraging empathy, and linking messages to real, tangible action. Effective communication needs to be strategic \u2014 shaped by who the audience is and what their local reality looks like. It should also use emotion, using relatable stories or species to encourage human connection. It needs to be visual and clear, so that people can understand the issue quickly. And perhaps most importantly, it has to be personal \u2014 grounded in real presence, strong relationships, and steady, long-term engagement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the same time, we must remember that those who turn to poison baits often do so in response to real challenges\u2014 threats to their animals, their income, or even their safety. That doesn\u2019t excuse the act, but it means we have to meet people where they are. We need to listen, understand what matters to them, what they care about, and how our message \u2014 and our actions \u2014 can help solve problems without resorting to a crime that puts wildlife, domestic animals, and people at risk. Communication alone won\u2019t solve the problem, but without it, solutions will be much harder to reach. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The BalkanDetox LIFE project\u202f <\/h2>\n\n\n\n
<\/figure>\n\n\n\nThe \u2018BalkanDetox LIFE<\/a>\u2018 project aims to strengthen national capacities to fight wildlife poisoning and raise awareness about the problem across Albania, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, the Republic of North Macedonia and Serbia. It is a five-year endeavour with a \u20ac1.8 million budget that received funding from the EU\u2019s\u202fPrograma LIFE<\/a>\u202fand co-funding by the\u202fVulture Conservation Foundation, the<\/a>\u202fMAVA Foundation<\/a>\u202fand\u202fEuronatur<\/a>. Project partners are the Vulture Conservation Foundation as the coordinating beneficiary, and the\u202fAlbanian Ornithological Society<\/a>,\u202fAssociation BIOM<\/a>,\u202fBird Protection and Study Society of Serbia<\/a>,\u202fFund for Wild Flora and Fauna<\/a>,\u202fHellenic Ornithological Society<\/a>,\u202fMacedonian Ecological Society<\/a>,\u202fOrnitolo\u0161ko dru\u0161tvo NA\u0160E Ptice<\/a>\u202fand the\u202fProtection and Preservation of Natural Environment in Albania<\/a>\u202fas associated beneficiaries.
