Over three days, the partners, the various Regional Directorates of the ICNF (Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests) and the NGO <a href=\"https:\/\/rewilding-portugal.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rewilding Portugal<\/a> discussed the progress made and planned the actions for the final stage of the project. The meeting also included a monitoring visit from CINEA (European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency), which is co-financing the project through the LIFE programme. The balance is largely positive, but the conservation work continues!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"464\" project&#8217;s main achievements\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As the project enters its consolidation phase, stakeholders highlight the growth of the Portuguese Cinereous Vulture population as a major victory, underpinned by decisive milestones:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>New breeding colony: <\/strong>Establishment of the country&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/new-cinereous-vulture-breeding-colony-discovered-in-portugal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fifth<\/a> breeding colony (in Alentejo, in the municipalities of Vidigueira and Portel).\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Acclimatisation in the Douro Internacional: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/third-group-of-cinereous-vultures-begins-acclimatisation-in-douro-internacional-portugal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Soft release<\/em><\/a> programme with ten individuals already acclimatised and five currently in the acclimatisation station.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Remote monitoring: <\/strong>Approximately <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/life-aegypius-return-reaches-milestone-of-50-cinereous-vultures-fitted-with-gps-gsm-transmitters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">60 Cinereous Vultures tagged<\/a> with GPS\/GSM transmitters, allowing for the detailed study of movements, behaviours, and causes of mortality or disturbance.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Food reinforcement: <\/strong>Increased food availability through the approval of several Private Areas for the Feeding of Necrophagous Birds (<a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/first-vultures-feeding-areas-southern-portugal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">APAAN<\/a>), in close collaboration with livestock farmers across the country.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Breeding success: <\/strong>Combating breeding failure by repairing existing <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/in-this-destructive-winter-in-iberia-cinereous-vultures-have-gained-more-nesting-platforms-and-safer-nests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">nesting platforms<\/a> and increasing available nesting sites through the installation of new ones.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Reducing disturbance: <\/strong>On-the-ground presence within local communities and <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/new-specialized-laboratory-strengthens-poison-detection-and-nature-protection-in-portugal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">intensified patrolling<\/a> by the GNR (National Republican Guard) around colonies, now bolstered by three new canine units specialised in poison detection.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Combating lead contamination: <\/strong>Training and awareness-raising within the hunting sector to promote the transition to <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/life-aegypius-return-launches-survey-for-hunters-and-game-managers-to-assess-perceptions-on-lead-free-ammunition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lead-free ammunition<\/a>, preventing collateral wild bird contamination.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Strategic intervention: <\/strong>Active participation in public consultations and forums on land-use planning and <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/clean-energy-yes-but-not-at-the-cost-of-biodiversity-life-aegypius-return\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the expansion of renewable energies<\/a>, advocating for the species\u2019 conservation.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Scientific contributions: <\/strong>Partnerships with national and European universities and research centres to deepen ecological and clinical-veterinary <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/using-the-cinereous-vulture-microbiome-to-strengthen-public-and-animal-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">knowledge<\/a> of this endangered species, as well as identifying mortality factors and producing highly relevant <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/wind-energy-and-safety-distances-new-guidelines-to-protect-the-cinereous-vulture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reports<\/a> and studies.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Cross-sector cooperation: <\/strong>Collaboration between conservationists, veterinarians, authorities, livestock farmers, land managers, hunters, rural communities, the media, and other stakeholders has been fundamental to the success of all initiatives.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The project is set to conclude in December 2027; therefore, a phase of consolidating progress and developing numerous strategic documents to guide the future conservation of the Cinereous Vulture now begins.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Douro Internacional Nature Park, much more than vultures\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The days of intense work were accompanied by sunny weather, breathtaking views of the cliffs above the river and the unfailing hospitality of the people of Tr\u00e1s-os-Montes. The host partners \u2013 Faia Brava and Palombar \u2013enriched the sessions with a gastronomic itinerary and visits to the local culture. The final day, dedicated to a field trip, showcased the impressive habitat <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/cinereous-vulture-crowdfunding-campaign-launched-after-major-fire-in-douro-internacional-hits-target-and-restoration-measures-are-implemented\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">restoration<\/a> work carried out by Palombar following the <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/es\/blog\/several-cinereous-vulture-nests-burned-in-the-douro-internacional-nature-park-in-northern-portugal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">major wildfire<\/a> that devastated the region last August.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Highlights include the re-equipping of the acclimatisation station (including the logistics centre and CCTV system), the sowing of key species for ecosystem functioning, the reinforcement of riparian galleries, and the increase in food availability for vultures.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The recovery effort is evident in the green once again covering the Nature Park and in the species that inhabit it.
