Back in 2023, another African White-backed Vulture toured a part of the Iberian Peninsula (see GPS-tagged African White-backed Vulture vastly explores the Iberian Peninsula – Vulture Conservation Foundation).

A species facing a dangerously fast decline

According to the Vulture Multi-species Action Plan (Vulture MsAP), co-developed by the Vulture Conservation Foundation and endorsed by the Convention for Migratory Species, there are 270,000 African White-backed Vulture (Gyps africanus) individuals, and the species is facing a rapid decline. It went from Least Concern in 2005 to Critically Endangered in only ten years, as stated by the IUCN Red List of Endangered Species.

The successive and frequent poisoning incidents in Africa are the key drivers behind the rapid decline of several vulture species. In addition, illegal trapping and killing for traditional belief practices, national and international illegal trade, and changes in their habitat, with a possible reduction of food availability, hinder the species’ survival. Other anthropic causes, such as power infrastructure and disturbance of nesting places, also pose problems for African vulture species like the White-backed Vulture.

The bird in question is the second white-backed vulture tagged this year in Morocco. The first one unfortunately died while trying to cross the Straits towards Europe (see One White-backed vulture lost to the dangerous crossing of the Strait of Gibraltar – Vulture Conservation Foundation). This second bird is a 3rd calendar year, a rare age in that part of the world – the few vagrants so far recorded in northern Morocco have been mostly first or 2nd year birds. It is only the second 3rd calendar year African White-backed Vulture ever seen in Jbel Moussa.

Crossing the dangerous Strait of Gibraltar

From capture and release on May 2 to May 7, the bird was in northern Morocco, at one point moving as far south as Larache, some 100 km soutwest from the capture point, but it soon returned to Jbel Mousa.

On May 7, it crossed the Gibraltar Strait, flying at an altitude of approximately 300m and at 70km/h, touching Europe on the west end of the bay of Gibraltar, near Algeciras, in the well-known Punta Carnero. It then turned west and spent its first night in Europe just east of Cadiz. The next day it flew over Doñana and headed north. Between May 8 and May 11, it flew over the Picos de Aroche, in western Andalusia.

Touring the Iberian Peninsula

On May 12, it crossed into Portugal and spent the day and night at Herdade da Contenda, a border area that harbours a Cinereous Vulture (Aegypius monachus) colony. It then moved west, and on May 13, it slept in Serra de Portel, where there is another Cinereous Vulture colony, before proceeding to cross Portugal from south to north. On May 13, it went as far south as Aljustrel and Castro Verde, then flew north, spent the night near Alcácer do Sal, then up the Tejo valley until Fátima, where it veered east, and slept north of Castelo Branco. It then continued its trip north through eastern Portugal, all the way to the Tua valley, then turning east to the well-known vulture hotspot of the Douro canyon, where it slept on May 15, near Freixo de Espada à Cointa. On May 16 it went northwest again and entered Galicia, east of Verín, and then further east into Castilla y León. Visited the Biosphere Reserve of the Ancares Leoneses, turned east, and slept SE of Léon, in the Iberian plateau.

On May 17, it went south again and slept East of Bragança (Portugal), and stayed in the upper Douro canyon until May 20, when it returned north and reached the area north of Puebla de Sanabria, where it stayed for a couple of days. On May 23, it flew northeast into the mountains of Picos de Europa and stayed some time in Parque Natural de Las Ubiñas/Angliru mountain. It then moved further west into northern Galicia, in an area just north of As Pontes de García Rodriguez, in the province of A Coruña. On May 28, it did a detour to the Atlantic Ocean, reaching the sea at the Costa Ártabra, just west of Cariño. Instead of taking the sea, it turned towards the inland. On May 29, it returned SW, passing west of Lugo, then Ourense, and stayed in the Manzaneda area until June 2. It finally headed west, entered Portugal again through the Peneda Gerês National Park, then returned SE and spent the night just north of Sanfins do Douro.

Map of the movements of the 3rd year African White-Backed vulture tagged in Morocco in May.
