The first week of the tour explored areas that host the North Atlantic right whale, the Eurasian lynx, and the White stork. You can learn about these animals on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/veloelan.cc\/2019\/07\/03\/wildlife-of-le-tour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">VeloElan&#8217;s blog<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Bearded Vultures in the Pyrenees<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today the race hits the Central Massif heading towards the Pyrenees! This year, the riders face some of the region\u2019s most iconic peaks, including the brutal and awe inspiring Col du Tourmalet on Saturday. These wild and picturesque mountains host a range of wildlife, including&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/pt\/vultures\/bearded-vulture\/\">Bearded Vultures<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 how exciting!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Bearded Vulture is the rarest of Europe&#8217;s vultures, and today it flies only in the Alps, in the Pyrenees, in Andalusia, and isolated island populations in Crete and Corsica. Led by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lpo.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">League pour la Protection des Oiseaux (LPO)<\/a>, the project is releasing captive-bred Bearded Vultures into the wild at sites such as the Parc Naturel R\u00e9gional des Grands Causses and Parc Naturel R\u00e9gional des Baronnies Proven\u00e7ales, which will create a core population that will connect the two populations of the species in the Alps and Pyrenees.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/pt\/2019\/07\/05\/we-reintroduced-a-record-of-22-bearded-vultures-into-the-wild-to-help-boost-local-populations\/\">the project reintroduced nine birds into the wild of France<\/a>! Five at the Parc Naturel R\u00e9gional des Grands Causses, two in Parc Naturel R\u00e9gional du Vercors and two more in the Parc Naturel R\u00e9gional des Baronnies.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/pt\/2019\/06\/26\/what-have-the-life-gypconnect-bearded-vultures-been-up-to-since-their-release-into-the-wild\/\">The vultures are adapting well in the wild so far<\/a>, having their first flights and becoming friends with wild vultures.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11997\" width=\"1033\" height=\"483\" srcset=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image-2.png 670w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image-2-300x140.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1033px) 100vw, 1033px\" \/><figcaption>Europe (one of the reintroduced vultures) in flight (c) Florian Durand<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Releasing nine birds in this one year alone in the same Massif is a fantastic outcome that involves a lot of dedication and collaboration from multiple stakeholders and brings the total released as part of this conservation project to 27!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Monitoring Bearded Vultures<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To secure the future of the species, it is also essential to track their movements and survival.&nbsp; Monitoring vultures through GPS transmitters that are attached to their back and through fieldwork observations provide critical data that helps inform more accurate conservation action.&nbsp;The monitoring of their breeding populations in the Alpine range and on Corsica is coordinated by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/pt\/our-work\/monitoring\/international-bearded-vulture-monitoring\/\">International Bearded Vulture Monitoring Network (IBM)<\/a>&nbsp;and the breeding situation is regularly updated and reported to the IBM-database.&nbsp;This year,&nbsp;Bearded Vultures&nbsp;were very busy during the breeding season!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Some interesting facts about Bearded Vultures<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image-2-9.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11998\" width=\"1026\" height=\"681\" srcset=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image-2-9.jpg 670w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image-2-9-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1026px) 100vw, 1026px\" \/><figcaption>Bearded Vultures (c) Bruno Berthemy<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Size<\/strong>: 100-115 cm<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Peso<\/strong>: 4,5-7,1 kg<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Envergadura<\/strong>: 250-285 cm<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Life<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>expectancy<\/strong>: up to 40 years in captivity<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Bearded vulture is an unmistakable bird, with black \u2018sideburns\u2019, red rings around the eyes and a long wedge-shaped tail. Bearded vultures have black facial markings and black wings, the rest of the head, neck and body are a vibrant rusty orange. This is because Bearded vultures in the wild rub themselves with ferric oxides. Captive born birds are therefore not rusty but white. Juvenile bearded vultures are entirely dark and undergo multiple moultings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why are Bearded Vultures important?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Contrary to popular belief, Bearded Vultures do not hunt live prey, and even avoid meat. Their diet consists for 80 to 90% of bleached carcass bones and they are capable of swallowing and digesting bones the size of a sheep&#8217;s vertebrae! If bones are too big, that does not stop the birds from having their meals. They drop the bones onto rocks from a height of up to 100 meters to shatter them \u2013 hence their name bone breaker in many national languages! Releasing captive-bred Bearded Vultures into the wild at sites such as the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/gypaetebarbu.fr\/life-gypconnect-en\/life-gypconnect-action-sites\/article\/grands-causses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Parc Naturel R\u00e9gional des Grands Causses<\/a>,&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/gypaetebarbu.fr\/life-gypconnect-en\/life-gypconnect-action-sites\/article\/les-baronnies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Parc Naturel R\u00e9gional des Baronnies Proven\u00e7ales<\/a>&nbsp;e&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.parc-du-vercors.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Parc Naturel R\u00e9gional du Vercors<\/a>&nbsp;will create a core population that will connect the two populations of the species in the Alps and Pyrenees. To facilitate movements between the new population and the Alpine and Pyrenean populations the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/pt\/life-projects\/gypconnect\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LIFE GYPCONNECT<\/a>&nbsp;team is creating a network of supplementary feeding stations, and tackling threats such as poisoning, and collision and electrocution with the electricity infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>International Bearded Vulture Monitoring Network<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/1563183390.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12005\" width=\"1030\" height=\"833\" srcset=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/1563183390.jpg 639w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/1563183390-300x243.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1030px) 100vw, 1030px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The International Bearded Vulture Monitoring Network\u00a0is a unique international collaboration led by the Vulture Conservation Foundation between national parks and non-governmental organisations to coordinate the monitoring activities for European Bearded Vulture populations. Through this network data is collected about the Bearded Vulture in Europe, shared and made available to everyone working for the conservation of the species. The IBM Network also uses this data and comes together to discuss conservation strategies and priorities for this species on an international level.
