The colony in&nbsp;Messolonghi&nbsp;is the largest Griffon Vulture colony in Mainland Greece and one of the most important wintering areas for the species in the Balkans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tracking vultures to tackle wildlife poisoning<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/pt\/mass-poisoning-causes-a-heavy-blow-to-the-largest-colony-of-griffon-vultures-in-mainland-greece\/\">catastrophic mass poisoning incident at the Griffon Vulture colony in Messolonghi, Greece, in February 2020,<\/a>&nbsp;the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/fwff.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fund for Wild Flora &amp; Fauna (FWFF)<\/a>&nbsp;took part in the&nbsp;tagging of five Griffon Vultures with GPS transmitters by providing advisory and logistical support to the Management Body of Messolonghi National Park in Greece. The FWFF provided three GPS transmitters under a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/whitleyaward.org\/winners\/wolves-bears-and-vultures-bulgaria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">project<\/a>&nbsp;funded by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/whitleyaward.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Whitley Fund for Nature<\/a>, and two were provided within the VCF&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/pt\/our-work\/anti-poisoning\/balkan-anti-poisoning-project\/\">Balkan Anti-Poisoning Project<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/pt\/2019\/06\/28\/bapp-small-grants-programme-fighting-poison-in-the-balkans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Small Grants Programme<\/a>, funded by the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/mava-foundation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mava Foundation<\/a>. In total, five Griffon Vultures were tagged on 6 and 7 March 2020.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Griffon Vultures tagged and released<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image-2-91.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13353\" width=\"1027\" height=\"685\" srcset=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image-2-91.jpg 670w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image-2-91-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1027px) 100vw, 1027px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wild-anima.gr\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ANIMA Rescue Centre<\/a>&nbsp;successfully rehabilitated two of the birds tagged that were poisoned by the incident in February 2020. The other three Griffon Vultures were equipped with transmitters and returned to nature after being bred for several years in captivity at another rescue centre in Greece. The release of the vultures happened at a special ceremony near Messolonghi, attended by conservationists, locals and officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Early Warning System for wildlife poisoning<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To ensure reliable monitoring of bird behaviour and rapid response to poisoning incidents, a minimum of five transmitters working at a time in one vulture colony are required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The FWFF has gained considerable experience first in responding to the case of Kresna Gorge, Bulgaria in March 2017, and subsequent application in the cases in Agrafa, Greece in 2018 and in Vrachanski Balkan, Bulgaria in 2019. The revolutionary use of transmitters as a tool for intensive monitoring and in-time control of threats to wildlife such as poisons and poaching has been described in a&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/fwff.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Early-warning-system-for-wildlife-poisoning-using-intensive-GPS-tracked-vultures-as-detectives-1-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">manual<\/a>&nbsp;developed within the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/pt\/life-projects\/vultures-back-to-life\/\">Vultures Back To LIFE<\/a>&nbsp;project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Five out of the six major vulture regions in the Balkans are already covered by the Early Warning System, with the number of vulture&nbsp;tagged&nbsp;steadily increasing with the help of donors such as LIFE, WFN, us here at the VCF and others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We hope that this case of Griffon Vulture poisoning in Messolonghi&nbsp;and the actions against it will lead to a change that will ensure the conservation of these increasingly vulnerable, and important birds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Source:&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/fwff.org\/%D0%B1%D1%8A%D0%BB%D0%B3%D0%B0%D1%80%D1%81%D0%BA%D0%B8-%D0%B8%D0%B7%D0%BD%D0%BE%D1%81-%D0%B8-%D0%BF%D1%80%D0%B8%D0%BB%D0%B0%D0%B3%D0%B0%D0%BD%D0%B5-%D0%BD%D0%B0-%D1%81%D0%B8%D1%81%D1%82%D0%B5%D0%BC\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FWFF<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Balkan Anti-Poisoning Project Small Grants Programme<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Balkan Anti-Poisoning Project&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/pt\/2019\/06\/28\/bapp-small-grants-programme-fighting-poison-in-the-balkans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Small Grants Programme<\/a>&nbsp;is the first time we at the Vulture Conservation Foundation have run a grant programme, and with this we aim to reinforce national capacities within relevant governmental authorities and conservation NGOs from six countries (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Greece, North Macedonia and Serbia) of the Balkan Peninsula. This work will support those organisations to improve the skills and capabilities in the detection and mitigation of poisoning incidents through the implementation of previously developed National Roadmaps and Strategies. More specifically, through these small grants we endeavor to secure the implementation of priority anti-poisoning actions listed in the National Anti-Poisoning Road-maps\/Strategies, strengthen the capacities of relevant national governmental institutions in combating the illegal use of poison baits, improve the enforcement of relevant legislation and attract other funding opportunities for implementation of large-scale anti-poisoning projects in the region. Through the support of the MAVA Foundation, we managed to dedicate a budget of \u20ac60.000 for these small grants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Balkan Anti-Poisoning Project<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"425\" height=\"195\" src=\"http:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image-1-134.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13354\" srcset=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image-1-134.jpg 425w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image-1-134-300x138.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 425px) 100vw, 425px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/pt\/our-work\/anti-poisoning\/balkan-anti-poisoning-project\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Balkan Anti-Poisoning Project<\/a>&nbsp;is a cross-border initiative bringing together wildlife conservation organisations, governmental agencies and other stakeholder such as; hunting associations, farmers and scientists, in&nbsp;six Balkan countries to tackle illegal wildlife poisoning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Funded by the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/mava-foundation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mava Foundation<\/a>&nbsp;we aim to secure real and continued engagement of the relevant national governmental authorities in the Balkan region against illegal wildlife poisoning and increase their capacity to counteract it and working together to take positive steps to protect vultures.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/pt\/our-work\/anti-poisoning\/balkan-anti-poisoning-project\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Balkan Anti-Poisoning Project<\/a>&nbsp;is a partnership between us here at the Vulture Conservation Foundation and the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aos-alb.org\/home.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Albanian Ornithological Society-AOS<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ppnea.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Protection and Preservation of Natural&nbsp;<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ppnea.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Environment in Albania-PPNEA<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/ptice.ba\/en\/ornithological-society-nase-ptice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ornithological Society \u201cNa\u0161e ptice\u201d<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biom.hr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Association BIOM<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ornithologiki.gr\/index.php?loc=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hellenic&nbsp;<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ornithologiki.gr\/index.php?loc=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ornithological Society-HOS<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/mes.org.mk\/nov-sajt\/?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Macedonian Ecological Society-MES<\/a>&nbsp;e&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/pticesrbije.rs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dru\u0161tvo za za\u0161titu i prou\u010davanje ptica Srbije<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/pt\/our-work\/anti-poisoning\/balkan-anti-poisoning-project\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Balkan Anti-Poisoning Project\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0also contributes directly into the implementation of the Vulture Multi-Species Action Plan by carrying out anti-poisoning actions in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Greece, North Macedonia and Serbia, and is building on\u00a0our\u00a0work for the last decade in the Balkans through\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Emilian_Stoynov\/publication\/269393862_Fund_for_Wild_Flora_Fauna_FWFF_Activities\/links\/54887a5c0cf268d28f08f682\/Fund-for-Wild-Flora-Fauna-FWFF-Activities.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Balkan Vulture Action Plan<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image-102.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13355\" width=\"1022\" height=\"575\" srcset=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image-102.png 670w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image-102-300x169.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1022px) 100vw, 1022px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Vultures Back To LIFE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"350\" height=\"234\" src=\"http:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image-162.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13356\" srcset=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image-162.jpg 350w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image-162-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Led by the wildlife conservation charity\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/greenbalkans.org\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Green Balkans<\/a>, with activities also implemented by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fwff.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fund for Wild Flora and Fauna<\/a>, and bringing together partners from Bulgaria, Spain and Germany,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/pt\/life-projects\/vultures-back-to-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vultures Back to LIFE<\/a>\u00a0aims to reintroduce the cinereous or Eurasian black vulture to Bulgaria.
