The good news is that swift and appropriate action prevented this potential disaster. With the possibility that the poison was still present and accessible, this presented a serious threat to the people of the village as well as the surrounding wildlife. Mariovo&#8217;s biodiversity is exceptionally rich and was under threat \u2013 not only do such poisoning incidents affect domestic animals, but they also pose adverse repercussions to wildlife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MES took immediate action. After receiving the news, they contacted the authorities, kicking off the coordination began for the investigation into the event as well as the non-harmful removal of the poisoned dogs. In the meantime, the situation became much more serious as they learned that two Griffon Vultures constantly monitored with GPS transmitters were preparing to land in the area where the poison was located. The two vultures are part of the ongoing BalkanDetox LIFE project\u2019s&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/balkandetoxlife.eu\/griffon-vulture-gps-movements\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">innovative initiative<\/a>&nbsp;to track poisoning incidents, save poisoned wildlife and prosecute wildlife criminals by tagging and intensively monitoring all Griffon Vulture colonies in the Balkans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Swift action prevents mass poisoning of 18 Griffon Vultures<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-2 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-2 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><ul class=\"blocks-gallery-grid\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/balkandetoxlife.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/Griffon-Vultures-circling-in-the-area-of-the-poisoning-incident-2-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Appropriate response to poisoning incident prevents mass mortality of 18 Griffon Vultures in North Macedonia\" data-id=\"6038\" data-full-url=\"https:\/\/balkandetoxlife.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/Griffon-Vultures-circling-in-the-area-of-the-poisoning-incident-2.jpg\" data-link=\"https:\/\/balkandetoxlife.eu\/?attachment_id=6038\" class=\"wp-image-6038\" \/><\/figure><\/li><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/balkandetoxlife.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/Griffon-Vultures-near-the-area-of-the-poisoning-incident-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Appropriate response to poisoning incident prevents mass mortality of 18 Griffon Vultures in North Macedonia\" data-id=\"6039\" data-full-url=\"https:\/\/balkandetoxlife.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/Griffon-Vultures-near-the-area-of-the-poisoning-incident.jpg\" data-link=\"https:\/\/balkandetoxlife.eu\/?attachment_id=6039\" class=\"wp-image-6039\" \/><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Since Griffon Vultures are considered to be social birds and often fly in flocks, the realistic number of vultures in the area was suspected to be higher than two. If the Griffon Vultures reached the poisoned animals, it could wipe out the species from North Macedonia. MES contacted the local border police and informed them of the potential catastrophe. They soon sent out a team to the location where the Griffon Vultures landed to drive them away before they could have the chance to feed on the poisoned animals. After one hour of trying, the police were successful in their efforts and the 18 vultures in the vicinity of the area left without coming in contact with the poisoned carcasses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the same day, a team from MES arrived in Vitolishte with the aim to ensure that there would be no further poisoning in the area. With support from the municipality of Prilep, the next day an inspection team from the Ministry of Interior Affairs and a communal inspector arrived in Vitolishte to conduct an investigation into the event and ensure that appropriate measures were taken to clear up the case. They carried out a field inspection around the area and, fortunately, did not find poisoned wildlife. They further informed the public prosecutor of the event, and hopefully, an adequate investigation led by the authorities will follow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Illegal Wildlife Poisoning remains vultures\u2019 biggest threat<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Illegal wildlife poisoning continues to be the biggest threat to the survival of vultures in North Macedonia and throughout the Balkan Peninsula. In fact, a study estimated that within the last 20 years, 2,300 vultures have died as a result of poisoning in the Balkans. As a consequence of this illegal practice, both the Bearded Vulture and the Cinereous Vulture became extinct in North Macedonia. Additionally, the use of poison has led to the decline of the Egyptian Vulture and Griffon Vulture populations to just a couple of nesting pairs. According to MES\u2019 last census, only 24 Griffon Vultures were present in North Macedonia. Essentially this means that if actions were not taken as fast as they were during the recent poisoning incident, their population could have been depleted beyond repair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The BalkanDetox LIFE project<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/link-card-dimensions.png\" alt=\"BalkanDetox LIFE logo\" class=\"wp-image-16707\" width=\"402\" height=\"210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/link-card-dimensions.png 800w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/link-card-dimensions-300x157.png 300w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/link-card-dimensions-768x401.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 402px) 100vw, 402px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/www.balkandetoxlife.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BalkanDetox LIFE<\/a>\u2018 project aims to strengthen national capacities to fight wildlife poisoning and raise awareness about the problem in Balkan countries. It is a five-year endeavour with a \u20ac1.8 million budget, which aims to raise awareness and strengthen national capacities to fight the problem of wildlife poisoning across Albania, Bosnia &amp; Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, the Republic of North Macedonia and Serbia. It received funding from the EU\u2019s&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/easme\/en\/life\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Programa LIFE<\/a>, and it is co-financed by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/pt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vulture Conservation Foundation, the<\/a>&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/mava-foundation.org\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MAVA Foundation<\/a>&nbsp;e&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.euronatur.org\/en\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Euronatur<\/a>, as well as by the Green Fund,&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/whitleyaward.org\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Whit<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fzoeu.hr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ley Fund for Nature&nbsp;and&nbsp;Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund<\/a>&nbsp;for specific actions. Project partners are the Vulture Conservation Foundation as the coordinating beneficiary, and the&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/aos-alb.org\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Albanian Ornithological Society<\/a>,&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biom.hr\/en\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Association BIOM<\/a>,&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/pticesrbije.rs\/about-us\/?lang=en\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bird Protection and Study Society of Serbia<\/a>,&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fwff.org\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fund for Wild Flora and Fauna<\/a>,&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ornithologiki.gr\/index.php?loc=en\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hellenic Ornithological Society<\/a>,&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mes.org.mk\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Macedonian Ecological Society<\/a>,&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ptice.ba\/en\/ornithological-society-nase-ptice\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ornitolo\u0161ko dru\u0161tvo NA\u0160E Ptice<\/a>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ppnea.org\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Protection and Preservation of Natural Environment in Albania<\/a>&nbsp;as associated beneficiaries.
