Thanks to the continued efforts of the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/fwff.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fund for Wild Flora and Fauna<\/a>&nbsp;(FWFF) to support these birds within the <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/pt\/projects\/vultures-back-to-life\/\">Vultures Back to LIFE<\/a> project, the population is making a steady recovery.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"releases-of-griffon-vultures-in-the-kresna-gorge\"><strong>Releases of Griffon Vultures in the Kresna Gorge<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"999\" height=\"667\" src=\"http:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Figure-7.-Tagging-of-a-Griffon-Vulture-with-OT-50-transmitter.png\" alt=\"Tagging of a Griffon Vulture with OT-50 transmitter \u00a9 Hristo Peshev\/ FWFF\" class=\"wp-image-23025\" srcset=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Figure-7.-Tagging-of-a-Griffon-Vulture-with-OT-50-transmitter.png 999w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Figure-7.-Tagging-of-a-Griffon-Vulture-with-OT-50-transmitter-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Figure-7.-Tagging-of-a-Griffon-Vulture-with-OT-50-transmitter-768x513.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 999px) 100vw, 999px\" \/><figcaption>Tagging of a Griffon Vulture with OT-50 transmitter \u00a9 Hristo Peshev\/ FWFF<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In the autumn of 2021, FWFF transferred five Griffon Vultures to the acclimatization aviary in Kresna Gorge. The team also released two other Griffon Vultures in the wild. Those two, as well as nine captured wild birds, were equipped with GPS\/GSM transmitters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"results-from-the-breeding-period\"><strong>Results from the breeding period<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Several pairs demonstrated breeding behaviour in 2021 \u2013 out of the four breeding pairs in the Kresna Gorge, two successfully fledged chicks in 2021. Furthermore, Kresna Gorge had visits from Griffon Vultures marked in Israel, Greece, Serbia, Croatia, Italy, and other parts of Bulgaria. On the other hand, birds released in Kresna Gorge visited Serbia, Greece, Austria, Turkey, Italy, Israel, North Macedonia and other parts of Bulgaria (Vrachanski Balkan, Sinite Kamani, Central Balkan, Kotel, and Eastern Rhodopes). Overall, more than 100 individually recognized Griffon Vultures were recorded in Kresna Gorge last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the breeding nucleus is small, the area has a central place in the Balkan Peninsula since it serves as a summering, on passage, and wintering site for the species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"other-rare-bird-species-attracted-to-the-area\"><strong>Other rare bird species attracted to the area<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The presence of the Griffon Vultures and the feeding site continuously attract other rare and threatened species in the area. In addition, FWFF still keeps a herd of Rhodope Short Horn Cattle in Kresna Gorge, and the herd&#8217;s numbers are on the rise. More and more farmers are now interested in raising this breed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FWFF also intensively tracks and collects GPS data from Griffon Vultures to help detect and prevent serious poisoning incidents.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On another positive note, the increase of the colony is evident in 2022. FWFF observed ten nests after the released birds in 2017-2018 are reaching maturity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-vultures-back-to-life-project\"><strong>The Vultures Back to LIFE project<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/vultures-back-to-life-logo-1024x439.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15826\" width=\"589\" height=\"253\" srcset=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/vultures-back-to-life-logo-1024x439.png 1024w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/vultures-back-to-life-logo-300x129.png 300w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/vultures-back-to-life-logo-768x329.png 768w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/vultures-back-to-life-logo.png 1050w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 589px) 100vw, 589px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Led by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/greenbalkans.org\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Green Balkans<\/a>&nbsp;in collaboration with the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fwff.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fund for Wild Flora and Fauna<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/pt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vulture Conservation Foundation<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.juntaex.es\/web\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Junta de Extremadura<\/a>&nbsp;e&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronatur.org\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Euronatur<\/a>, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/pt\/projects\/vultures-back-to-life\/\">Vultures Back to LIFE<\/a>&nbsp;project aims to reintroduce the Cinereous or Eurasian Black Vulture to Bulgaria. The team will transfer and release into the wild around 60 birds, some coming from captive-breeding backgrounds but mostly from Spanish wildlife rehabilitation centres.
