While we are happy for these four precious chicks, the total number of chicks this season is notably lower than in previous years. This year ten eggs in total were laid of which four were infertile and six fertile. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The reasons behind this reduced figure remain unclear, and interestingly, other breeding centres within the<a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/pt\/our-work\/captive-breeding\/bearded-vulture-eep\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Bearded Vulture EEP (European Endangered Species Programme)<\/a> have also reported similar trends this year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-10-768x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"Bearded Vulture Chick recently hatched\" class=\"wp-image-39874\" style=\"width:506px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-10-768x1024.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-10-225x300.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-10-1152x1536.jpeg 1152w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-10-9x12.jpeg 9w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-10.jpeg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>BG1262 &#8211;<\/strong> First chick of the season 2024-2025 at Guadalent\u00edn&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A closer look at this year\u2019s chicks&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Guadalent\u00edn, managed by the Junta de Andaluc\u00eda and coordinated by the Vulture Conservation Foundation within the EEP, remains one of the most important facilities for the conservation breeding of Bearded Vultures in Europe.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s look at the four chicks of this season:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>25 February \u2013 The first chick of the season: BG1262<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>At precisely 00:10, the first chick of the 2024 season made its debut. Hatched from Salvia\u2019s egg (parents: Andaluc\u00eda x Salvia \u2013 BG391 x BG360), the chick required a bit of assistance to break out of its shell\u2014proving that even the best beginnings sometimes need a helping hand. Weighing in at a healthy 136.4 grams, the chick developed normally in the laboratory and, as you can see in the video below, wasted no time developing a strong appetite. The Guadalent\u00edn team\u2019s carefully prepared snacks were clearly appreciated\u2014enthusiastically and repeatedly!&nbsp;On 2 March, the chick was successfully adopted by its biological parents, who immediately began feeding it and displaying all the right parental instincts. A strong start to life, with promising signs for the future!&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Meet BG1262  - First chick of the season 2024-2025 at Guadalent\u00edn\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GpD0iTJ6ehs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>1 March \u2013 Viola\u2019s first chick hatches: BG1267<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>In the early hours of the morning, at 02:45, BG1267 hatched without any assistance, weighing 155.7g. This chick is the proud offspring of El\u00edas x Viola (BG313 x BG330), and its development in the laboratory has been progressing smoothly. This chick, from Toba\u2019s egg (parents: Borosa x Toba \u2013 BG337 x BG317), weighed only 120.8g and had a rough start. Initially very weak with no appetite and significant digestive issues, it required intensive care, including four days of antibiotherapy and frequent doses of oral serum, chamomile, and probiotics to keep dehydration at bay. After six days of dedicated care, the chick\u2019s condition improved, and it began eating on its own. The chick has been developing normally in the laboratory, showing all the signs of healthy growth. Every chick hatched brings us one step closer to securing the future of this species in the wild.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bearded Vulture EEP&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/pt\/our-work\/captive-breeding\/bearded-vulture-eep\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Bearded Vulture EEP<\/a>, coordinated by the Vulture Conservation Foundation (VCF) on behalf of EAZA, continues to focus on enhancing the genetic diversity and stability of the European population.
