Her chick was rescued and transferred to the Green Balkans Wildlife Rescue Centre.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"437\" height=\"290\" src=\"http:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/BV_Recovery_2025_eleni_1.jpg\" alt=\"Cinereous Vulture in the nest on a tree with its chick\" class=\"wp-image-40367\" srcset=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/BV_Recovery_2025_eleni_1.jpg 437w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/BV_Recovery_2025_eleni_1-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/BV_Recovery_2025_eleni_1-18x12.jpg 18w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 437px) 100vw, 437px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a9 GreenBalkans<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A joint conservation effort<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The return of the Cinereous Vulture is the result of years of dedicated conservation work by Bulgarian organizations such as Green Balkans, the Fund for Wild Flora and Fauna, and the Society for the Protection of Birds of Prey, in cooperation with international partners including the Vulture Conservation Foundation (VCF).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 2018, more than 100 Cinereous Vultures were released in Bulgaria through the <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/pt\/projects\/vultures-back-to-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vultures Back to LIFE<\/a> e <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/pt\/projects\/bearded-vulture-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bearded Vulture LIFE<\/a> projects, both co-funded by the European Union&#8217;s LIFE Programme.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of the released vultures were rescued from the wild in Spain and donated primarily by the regional government of Extremadura (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.juntaex.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Junta de Extremadura<\/a>), with additional contributions from Andalusia (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.juntadeandalucia.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Junta de Andaluc\u00eda<\/a>). They were then quarantined at the wildlife rescue centre <a href=\"https:\/\/amus.org.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AMUS<\/a> and transferred to Bulgaria by the VCF. Some birds were also donated by the <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/pt\/our-work\/captive-breeding\/cinereous-vulture-eep\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EAZA zoo network&#8217;s ex-situ breeding programme (EEP)<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Releasing birds is only part of the challenge. A key breakthrough came in 2021, with the first fledged chick born in the wild since reintroduction began.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Progress has steadily continued:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n\n<li>2021: 1 chick\u00a0<\/li>\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n\n<li>2022: 1 chick\u00a0<\/li>\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n\n<li>2023: 3 chicks\u00a0<\/li>\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n\n<li>2024: 5 chicks\u00a0<\/li>\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n\n<li>2025: 8 chicks\u00a0<\/li>\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Field experts consider the population to be in the &#8220;establishment&#8221; phase. Once 10 or more chicks fledge per year and locally born birds begin to breed, the species may be considered self-sustaining in the wild.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Bearded Vulture LIFE Project<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-medium is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"250\" src=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Bearded-Vulture-LIFE-project-logo-300x250.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-36851\" style=\"width:300px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Bearded-Vulture-LIFE-project-logo-300x250.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Bearded-Vulture-LIFE-project-logo-1024x853.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Bearded-Vulture-LIFE-project-logo-768x640.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Bearded-Vulture-LIFE-project-logo-14x12.jpeg 14w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Bearded-Vulture-LIFE-project-logo.jpeg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/vultureslife.fwff.org\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bearded Vulture LIFE<\/a>\u201d project is a comprehensive initiative, aiming to restore the Bearded Vulture and Cinereous Vulture across Bulgaria and the Balkans. With a budget of \u20ac5.17 million, co-funded by the European Union\u2019s LIFE Programme, the project commenced in August 2023 and is expected to continue until 2030. Building upon the achievements of its predecessor, \u201cVultures Back to Life,\u201d it is coordinated by Green Balkans, with five more partner organizations within Bulgaria, including the Fund for Wild Flora and Fauna, Foundation EkoObshtnost, EVN \u2013 Elektropradelenie Yug EAD, Severozapadno Darzhavno Predpriyatie \u2013 Vratsa, and \u201cSinite kamani\u201d Nature Park Directorate. Furthermore, the project benefits from international collaboration, including the Vulture Conservation Foundation (VCF), responsible for the translocation and safeguarding of captive-bred birds secured for release.
