These birds, which had been rescued from the wild in a weak situation and rehabilitated, were at the acclimatisation station located in the PNDI, where they underwent a process of adaptation and loyalty to the territory &#8211; a pioneering measure in Portugal, known as <em>soft release<\/em>, implemented by the LIFE Aegypius Return project.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The aim is to recover the country&#8217;s most fragile and isolated colony, which was severely affected by the great fires of last August.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"http:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Cinereous-Vultures-in-the-acclimatisation-station-socialising-with-a-Cinereous-Vulture-outside.-Image-taken-by-video-surveillance-cameras-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Cinereous Vultures in the acclimatisation station, socialising with a Cinereous Vulture outside. Image taken by video surveillance cameras<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Acclimatisation after the fires&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The acclimatisation station was opened at an event organised by <a href=\"https:\/\/palombar.pt\/pt\/noticias\/projeto-life-aegypius-return-devolve-seis-abutres-pretos-a-natureza-no-douro-internacional-2025-2f10-2f30\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Palombar<\/a> &#8211; Conservation of Nature and Rural Heritage, a partner NGO in LIFE Aegypius Return. The fire even threatened the acclimatisation station itself, forcing the <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/pt\/blog\/donations-ensure-the-return-of-cinereous-vultures-to-the-acclimatisation-station-in-douro-internacional-portugal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">temporary removal of<\/a> the birds and the creation of an emergency plan to guarantee the continuity of conservation efforts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to the strong public response to the appeal launched by Palombar and the project partners, it was possible to resume protection actions for this endangered species.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The release of these six individuals marks a crucial step in strengthening the transboundary Douro International colony, the smallest and most vulnerable in Portugal.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gofund.me\/adce8c27b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><em>Continue supporting<\/em><\/strong><\/a><strong><em> this endangered species. They were rescued and rehabilitated at various centres: CRAS HV-UTAD and CIARA, the Centre for the Study and Recovery of Wild Animals (CERAS), the Centre for the Reception and Recovery of Wild Animals (CARAS), the Gaia Biological Park (CRF-PBG) and the Montejunto Wild Animal Recovery Centre (CRASM).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After rehabilitation, they were transferred to the acclimatisation station located in the municipality of Freixo de Espada \u00e0 Cinta, on a Faia Brava property, in March this year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Upon <a href=\"https:\/\/palombar.pt\/pt\/noticias\/mais-seis-abutres-pretos-integram-programa-para-reforcar-a-colonia-do-douro-internacional-2025-2f03-2f28\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">arrival<\/a> \u2013 and again when they were <a href=\"https:\/\/palombar.pt\/pt\/noticias\/donativos-garantem-retorno-dos-abutres-pretos-a-estacao-de-aclimatacao-no-douro-internacional-2025-2f09-2f17\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">relocated<\/a> after the August fire \u2013 the vultures were thoroughly examined by veterinarians from CRAS-HV-UTAD.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each bird was ringed and equipped with <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/pt\/blog\/life-aegypius-return-reaches-milestone-of-50-cinereous-vultures-fitted-with-gps-gsm-transmitters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GPS\/GSM transmitters<\/a>, allowing continuous and remote monitoring of their movements and adaptation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" 21 October, Palombar carried out environmental education sessions with 6th-grade students from the Guerra Junqueiro School Group in Freixo de Espada \u00e0 Cinta.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sessions explored the ecological role of scavenger birds, the threats they face, and the conservation work carried out under LIFE Aegypius Return.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the second session, students met the Cinereous Vultures in acclimatisation and took part in fun, creative activities to choose their names.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The students\u2019 enthusiasm and participation helped foster a deeper connection with the species and a sense of belonging to the local natural heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The names of the Cinereous Vultures&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The names chosen by the students generally honour the area and the landscape, referring to toponymy and local biodiversity. All the names start with the letter B, to mark the second year of the <em>soft release<\/em> programme.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Find out about each name and the reason given by the students for their choice:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Baga <\/strong>(<em>Berry<\/em><strong>)<\/strong>&#8211; &#8220;We chose Baga because it\u2019s a fruit. Although vultures don\u2019t eat berries, they are important because they clean the environment and prevent disease.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>B\u00e9tula <\/strong><em>(Birch)<\/em><strong> <\/strong>&#8211; &#8220;We chose B\u00e9tula because it&#8217;s an element of nature and a beautiful name.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Bolacha <\/strong><em>(Biscuit<\/em>)<em> <\/em>&#8211; &#8220;We wanted a sweet name because we love the vultures and don\u2019t want them to disappear. We want to give a good impression of them so there are more vultures on Earth.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Branco <\/strong><em>(White)<\/em><strong> <\/strong>&#8211; &#8220;Initially, we chose <em>Chicken<\/em> (<em>Frango<\/em>) because it looks like a chicken, so it seemed like the right name. But as it had to start with B, we adapted the name to Branco.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Brisa <\/strong><em>(Breeze)<\/em><strong> <\/strong>&#8211; &#8220;Because vultures need a warm breeze to take flight.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Bru\u00e7\u00f3 <\/strong>&#8211; &#8220;It\u2019s a village near Mogadouro, with many historical monuments, the River Douro, and big trees station.&nbsp;<br>Taking turns, each had the unique chance to turn the crank that opens the aviary, allowing the vultures to fly free \u2013 a moving moment witnessed up close (though hidden from the birds to avoid disturbance).<br>Together, they opened the \u201cdoor\u201d that returned the Cinereous Vultures to the skies of the Douro International Nature Park.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure journey&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With the aviary open, one by one, the Cinereous Vultures took off. Some were welcomed by a flock of curious Griffon Vultures (<em>Gyps fulvus<\/em>) that were near the aviary, as if greeting them home.&nbsp;<br>They explored the surroundings and the adjacent feeding station for scavenger birds, gradually readapting to life in the wild.&nbsp;<br>It is hoped that they will settle and breed in the Douro region, strengthening this delicate cross-border colony. They had also been found weakened in the wild and were rehabilitated at CRAS HV-UTAD.
