Large birds, such as birds of prey and scavengers, which often face fragile conservation statuses, are among the most common victims.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mortality caused by these structures is essentially due to two phenomena:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0006320717317925\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Collision<\/strong><\/a><strong>: <\/strong>Occurs due to the difficulty birds have in visualising conductor and earth wires in their frontal field of vision, which is why these cables must be properly marked.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/cbg.uvt.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/AWUTSerBio_December2025_233-240_final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Electrocution<\/strong><\/a><strong>: <\/strong>Happens when birds use the pylons as perches or nesting sites, establishing contact between different live components (phases) or between a conductor and the earthed structure.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Various European projects (e.g. LIFE <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifepowerlines4birds.lpn.pt\/pt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PowerLines4Birds<\/a>, LIFE <a href=\"https:\/\/www.safelines4birds.eu\/project\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SafeLines4Birds<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/danubefreesky.eu\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LIFE Danube Free Sky<\/a>) have been tackling these threats by detecting critical mortality hotspots and subsequently installing anti-collision devices (diverters) and insulating dangerous pylons. For example, there is an urgent need to develop artificial intelligence and computing solutions that facilitate the monitoring of birds&#8217; three-dimensional use of the landscape, incident detection, and micro-scale factor analysis to reduce the probability of mortality incidents. The rapid marking of vast stretches of power lines increasingly depends on the use of technologically advanced devices (e.g. made of durable polymers, UV-light emitters powered by the magnetic field of the conductor cables, among other solutions) that can be installed by drones. Avoiding the use of cranes or lifts facilitates the marking of cables in sensitive or difficult-to-access habitats (wetlands, cliffs, etc.) and drastically reduces execution time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"746\" src=\"http:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Installation-of-bird-diverters-using-drones-\u00a9VCF--1024x746.png\" alt=\"Installation of bird diverters using drones \u00a9VCF\" class=\"wp-image-41837\" srcset=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Installation-of-bird-diverters-using-drones-\u00a9VCF--1024x746.png 1024w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Installation-of-bird-diverters-using-drones-\u00a9VCF--300x219.png 300w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Installation-of-bird-diverters-using-drones-\u00a9VCF--768x559.png 768w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Installation-of-bird-diverters-using-drones-\u00a9VCF--1536x1119.png 1536w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Installation-of-bird-diverters-using-drones-\u00a9VCF--16x12.png 16w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Installation-of-bird-diverters-using-drones-\u00a9VCF-.png 1812w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Installation of bird diverters using drones \u00a9VCF<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Persistent gaps\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the significant progress already made in mitigating the energy sector\u2019s impacts on biodiversity, some gaps persist.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For instance, the energy transition is also accompanied by more sustainable mobility solutions. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/org\/science\/article\/pii\/S1314694722000355\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Railway electrification<\/a> also causes mortality through collision and electrocution, an aspect often overlooked in Environmental Impact Assessments.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is an urgent need to define clear, scientifically validated standards for safety distances between bird feeding and breeding sites and the installation of electrical infrastructure, similar to <a href=\"http:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/SpatialGuidelines-ProtectionCV-Windfarms.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the study published<\/a> as part of the LIFE Aegypius Return project to safeguard Cinereous Vultures from wind turbines.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The needs for impact mitigation further extend to the legal field, with a common demand being the publication of EU directives that regulate impact mitigation measures and hold non-compliant parties accountable.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Cinereous Vulture and the LIFE Aegypius Return approach\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The LIFE Aegypius Return project was presented during the Free Sky for Birds 2026 Conference as an example of <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/pt\/blog\/clean-energy-yes-but-not-at-the-cost-of-biodiversity-life-aegypius-return\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">best practice<\/a> regarding efforts to prevent harmful effects potentially arising from the expansion of renewable energy in Portugal. These efforts include active participation in <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/pt\/blog\/strategic-cinereous-vulture-colony-in-southern-portugal-under-serious-threat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">technical discussions<\/a> and public consultation processes, the presentation of <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/pt\/blog\/wind-energy-and-safety-distances-new-guidelines-to-protect-the-cinereous-vulture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">scientific arguments<\/a>, diplomatic mediation of discussions between different stakeholders, and the promotion of <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/pt\/blog\/cinereous-vulture-gave-biodiversity-a-voice-at-renewable-energy-conference\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cross-sectoral cooperation<\/a>
