The first group included\u00a0wild-hatched\u00a0Sardinian\u00a0Griffon\u00a0Vultures,\u00a0birds\u00a0previously\u00a0released\u00a0in\u00a0the Bosa breeding\u00a0colony\u00a0by\u00a0the LIFE Under the\u00a0Griffon\u00a0Wings project, and two birds rehabilitated\u00a0by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/pt\/projects\/life-safe-for-vultures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LIFE Safe for\u00a0Vultures<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0released\u00a0in Bosa in 2024. The second and\u00a0third\u00a0groups\u00a0included\u00a0vultures\u00a0released\u00a0as part of the LIFE Safe for Vultures project&#8217;s\u00a0restocking\u00a0initiative\u00a0in\u00a0Villasalto,\u00a0Southeast\u00a0Sardinia.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sardinia\u00a0is\u00a0home to the last native\u00a0population\u00a0of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/pt\/vultures\/griffon-vulture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Griffon\u00a0Vultures<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0Italy. In the 1930s, the\u00a0Sardinian\u00a0Griffon\u00a0Vulture\u00a0population\u00a0counted\u00a0800-1200 individuals, but direct persecution,\u00a0poisoning, and\u00a0increasing\u00a0food\u00a0scarcity\u00a0caused\u00a0a\u00a0sharp\u00a0decline\u00a0in the\u00a0population. The last Remaining stronghold of Griffon Vultures was a single, vulnerable\u00a0breeding\u00a0nucleus\u00a0in\u00a0northwestern\u00a0Sardinia, between\u00a0Bosa and Alghero. The first\u00a0conservation\u00a0efforts\u00a0began\u00a0in the 1970s with supplementary feeding sites,\u00a0followed\u00a0by\u00a0legal\u00a0protection\u00a0and\u00a0systematic\u00a0monitoring of breeding\u00a0birds. The\u00a0restocking\u00a0initiatives\u00a0began\u00a0between\u00a01987 and 1995,\u00a0but\u00a0mass\u00a0poisonings\u00a0in the late 1990s and 2000s\u00a0took\u00a0a\u00a0toll\u00a0on the\u00a0population. From 2016, projects like LIFE Under the\u00a0Griffon\u00a0Wings and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/pt\/projects\/life-safe-for-vultures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LIFE Safe for Vultures <\/a>carried out restocking initiatives, tackled\u00a0threats,\u00a0increased\u00a0food\u00a0availability\u00a0through\u00a0a\u00a0feeding\u00a0station network, and\u00a0secured\u00a0the\u00a0protection\u00a0of key\u00a0sites\u00a0and\u00a0habitats.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-56004b15\"><h2 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">Three groups, two\u00a0geographical\u00a0areas, and\u00a0two\u00a0different\u00a0behaviours\u00a0<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The first\u00a0two\u00a0groups, one in the\u00a0north\u00a0and one in the south of the\u00a0island,\u00a0showed\u00a0a strong attachment to\u00a0their\u00a0release area. In the first case, the close\u00a0presence\u00a0of\u00a0other\u00a0wild and\u00a0released\u00a0individuals\u00a0likely\u00a0influenced\u00a0the\u00a0tagged\u00a0vultures\u2019\u00a0behaviour. In\u00a0addition, the area\u00a0around\u00a0Bosa and Punta Cristallo\u00a0hosts\u00a0supplementary\u00a0feeding\u00a0stations, which\u00a0provide\u00a0predictable\u00a0carrion\u00a0for the\u00a0vultures,\u00a0roosting\u00a0and breeding\u00a0sites.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second group\u00a0comprised\u00a0vultures\u00a0released\u00a0in\u00a0springtime\u00a0near\u00a0Villasalto\u00a0after 10\u00a0months\u00a0of\u00a0acclimatisation\u00a0in the project\u00a0aviary.\u00a0Their\u00a0fidelity to the release site\u00a0is\u00a0likely\u00a0the\u00a0result\u00a0of the\u00a0acclimatisation\u00a0period,\u00a0combined\u00a0with the\u00a0favourable\u00a0conditions\u00a0and\u00a0attractiveness\u00a0of\u00a0the Villasalto\u00a0area or\u00a0Griffon\u00a0Vultures. This\u00a0area\u00a0offers\u00a0safe\u00a0feeding\u00a0opportunities, thanks to the\u00a0supplementary\u00a0feeding\u00a0stations network and\u00a0roosting\u00a0sites.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the\u00a0contrary, the\u00a0third\u00a0group\u00a0proved\u00a0to be full of\u00a0young\u00a0explorers. The\u00a0vultures,\u00a0released\u00a0in\u00a0autumn, after\u00a0only\u00a06\u00a0months\u00a0of\u00a0acclimatisation, moved\u00a0northwards\u00a0within\u00a0a\u00a0few\u00a0weeks after\u00a0their\u00a0release. The data showed that the\u00a0historical\u00a0area in the\u00a0northwest\u00a0of the\u00a0island\u00a0is\u00a0still\u00a0a\u00a0crucial\u00a0area for\u00a0the Griffon\u00a0Vulture\u00a0population. The\u00a0conservation\u00a0actions\u00a0taken\u00a0by the LIFE Under the Griffon Wings create\u00a0favourable\u00a0conditions\u00a0for\u00a0vultures\u00a0even\u00a0after the end of the project.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Villasalto\u00a0demonstrates to be another core area for the species, especially now that the population is growing and expanding southwards. Thanks to the efforts of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/pt\/projects\/life-safe-for-vultures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LIFE\u00a0Safe for\u00a0Vultures<\/a>\u00a0project, the area now supports the establishment of a new colony in southeastern Sardinia. The contrasting patterns between the two groups of vultures released in\u00a0Villasalto\u00a0highlight that reintroduced vultures adapt dynamically to local ecological conditions and social cues.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is known that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.isci.%202023.106699\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">longer acclimatization periods have a positive impact on<\/a> the establishment of released Griffon Vultures; whether the season of release plays a direct role in the long-range explorations\u00a0observed\u00a0needs further investigation. In this context, our findings offer important insights for future release strategies. Synchronizing release timing with\u00a0favorable\u00a0ecological conditions and resource\u00a0availability\u00a0could enhance\u00a0establishment\u00a0success while maximizing the resilience and connectivity of the Sardinian population.\u00a0Lastly,\u00a0telemetry data can be used in environmental impact assessments related to the construction of new energy infrastructures or the expansion of existing ones.\u00a0Thanks to the monitoring data, the\u00a0LIFe\u00a0Safe for Vultures project\u00a0submitted\u00a0over 20 observations\u00a0to\u00a0energy infrastructure development proposals,\u00a0successfully preventing the construction of energy infrastructures close to Griffon Vultures&#8217; core areas.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">LIFE Safe for Vultures<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"436\" height=\"268\" src=\"http:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/LIFE-Safe-for-Vultures-logo.png\" alt=\"LIFE Safe for Vultures logo\" class=\"wp-image-19993\" srcset=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/LIFE-Safe-for-Vultures-logo.png 436w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/LIFE-Safe-for-Vultures-logo-300x184.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 436px) 100vw, 436px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/pt\/blog\/life-safe-for-vultures-new-project-reinforces-griffon-vulture-population-in-sardinia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LIFE Safe for Vultures<\/a>\u00a0is co-financed by the EU\u2019s LIFE Programme to restore the vulture guild in Sardinia. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.uniss.it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">University of Sassari<\/a>\u00a0leads the project in collaboration with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sardegnaforeste.it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Agenzia Regionale Forestas<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sardegnaambiente.it\/corpoforestale\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sardegna Corpo Forestale<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.e-distribuzione.it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">E-Distribuzione<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/pt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vulture Conservation Foundation<\/a>. LIFE Safe for Vultures builds on the work of the successful\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/vulturesardinia\/?__cft__%5b0%5d=AZUUMnODnbv94bmEvh3K8Gse80qJIWJW0EAYoXRIfjVV12rlVK50a8QCqcR9DOVUqBAbCmM7xuHy-jCPrValPVo6T3AxT0d0aUV0pQK4WSDPkILhqdzUyNWdUxkzQ9iEn-gE-Wg7h1UDFYPJrVFK67q7rirCHInSpa4bZQNofaWmzf3GgWCf6gOrNpE44-uO7sg&amp;__tn__=kK-R\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LIFE Under Griffon Wings<\/a>, with the ultimate objective for Griffon Vultures to regain their historic ranges and distribution areas from the central-eastern part of Sardinia to the south and promote the long-term survival of the species on the island.
