In the past two years, she has been working in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nabu.am\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NABU<\/a>\u00a0(German Nature Protection Union \u2013 Armenian branch)\u00a0in\u00a0partnership with\u00a0the Vulture Conservation Foundation to closely monitor\u00a0selected individuals via GPS transmitter. In Armenia, it favours\u00a0open Juniperus woodlands, which provide both nesting\u00a0and roosting\u00a0sites.\u00a0Unfortunately, this habitat is often subject to wildfires that destroy hectares of woodlands every few years.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\u00a0Cinereous Vulture\u00a0is classified as Endangered in the Red Book of Armenia, with\u00a0an estimated 50 breeding pairs nationwide.\u00a0Habitat loss, disturbance, poisoning, illegal\u00a0trade,\u00a0and poaching threaten this\u00a0already endangered species,\u00a0though their impacts have not been estimated due to the absence of focused studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A landmark discovery: new breeding colony in Vayots&nbsp;Dzor&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/\u00a9Lusine-Aghajanyan_NABU_Armenia-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Cinereous Vulture in a nest in Armenia\" class=\"wp-image-41877\" style=\"width:441px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/\u00a9Lusine-Aghajanyan_NABU_Armenia-scaled.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/\u00a9Lusine-Aghajanyan_NABU_Armenia-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/\u00a9Lusine-Aghajanyan_NABU_Armenia-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/\u00a9Lusine-Aghajanyan_NABU_Armenia-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/\u00a9Lusine-Aghajanyan_NABU_Armenia-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/\u00a9Lusine-Aghajanyan_NABU_Armenia-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/\u00a9Lusine-Aghajanyan_NABU_Armenia-18x12.jpg 18w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Cinereous Vulture in a nest in Armenia \u00a9Lusine Aghajanyan_NABU_Armenia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In the spring of 2024, Lusine\u00a0Aghajanyan\u00a0and her colleague Emin Karapetyan made a discovery that would reshape what ornithologists knew about the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/pt\/vultures\/cinereous-vulture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cinereous Vulture<\/a>\u00a0in Armenia. They found five nests in the Arpa River valley in Vayots\u00a0Dzor\u00a0Province (south-east Armenia). All nests\u00a0contained\u00a0either nestlings or eggs, and in two of them, adult vultures were\u00a0observed. The dimension of the\u00a0colony suggests\u00a0that it had been\u00a0established\u00a0for 7-10 years.\u00a0Local testimonies confirmed the hypothesis, reporting\u00a0that large, dark vultures had been seen in the area for years.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All five monitored pairs bred successfully that year, and all chicks fledged. The discovery, formally documented in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ajol.info\/index.php\/vulnew\/article\/view\/295532\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Aghajanyan&#8217;s&nbsp;paper published in Vulture News (Vol. 87)<\/a>, marks a significant moment for Armenian ornithology.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lusine&nbsp;Aghajanyan\u2019s&nbsp;conservation efforts&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Lusine\u00a0Aghajanyan\u00a0has been at the forefront of vulture conservation in Armenia since 2018, working within the framework of NABU. She\u00a0initiated\u00a0a Birds of Prey research and conservation project,\u00a0focused on the four vulture species found in Armenia and two eagle species, conducting nesting area surveys across most of the country. In addition,\u00a0she\u00a0has been\u00a0voluntarily contributing to the Central Asian Vultures Project, which studies nesting areas and tags vultures in Central Asia, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the years, she\u00a0established\u00a0a <strong>vulture caretakers&#8217; network<\/strong>: a community-based monitoring system in which locals from villages throughout Armenia monitor vultures and report concerns. The scope and rigour of the work inspired the VCF team and led to a formal partnership between VCF and the NABU Armenian Branch. The VCF provided\u00a0her with three\u00a0GPS transmitters: two for Bearded or Cinereous Vultures, and one for an Egyptian Vulture.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following year, four\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/pt\/vultures\/cinereous-vulture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cinereous Vultures<\/a>\u00a0were tagged at the Vayots\u00a0Dzor\u00a0colony, two of them fitted with VCF transmitters. One bird was named\u00a0Ishkhan\u00a0after the ranger of the protected area where it\u00a0hatched. At the same time,\u00a0Aghajanyan\u2019s\u00a0work in Vayots\u00a0Dzor\u00a0has opened\u00a0new questions on unmonitored Cinereous Vulture colonies across  Armenia.
