This past Thursday, an official ceremony presented the two vultures to an enthusiastic crowd ahead of their release at Parque Natural de la Tinen\u00e7a de Benifass\u00e0.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We started the <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/pt\/bearded-vulture-reintroduction-maestrazgo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reintroduction of\u00a0Bearded Vultures at Maestrazgo in Spain<\/a> last year, in an attempt to reintroduce the species in the region. Historically, there was a breeding population of the vultures in the area, and now several vultures released in Andalusia regularly visit it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Presenting the vultures<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ahead of their release into the wild, the Councillor for Agriculture, Environment, Climate Change and Rural Development, Elena Cebri\u00e1n, together with the regional secretary of Environment, Francisco Javier Quesada, presented the two Bearded Vultures to locals.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Elena Cebri\u00e1n emphasised &#8220;the scientific and ecological importance&#8221; of this project that goes beyond the Tinen\u00e7a and thanked &#8220;all the people, entities and governments that have allied to make this dream come true&#8221;. That is the return of the &#8220;crebal\u00f2s&#8221; (local name of the Bearded Vulture) to these lands.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/GVAAgroambient\/videos\/347942572586775\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Video<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Basi and Boira<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We left the creative naming of the birds to schoolchildren, who did a great job baptizing the birds Basi and Boira. Both vultures were born in captivity, the female in the breeding centre of Cazorla (Ja\u00e9n) and the male in Vallcalent (Lleida), weighing six kilos each during their release. After the ceremony, they released Basi and Boira at an adaptation aviary in Bel to help acclimatize them in the area. After one month they will be released into the wild, making their first flights. The area also has specific feeders for Bearded Vultures to encourage them to stay in the area.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-1' class='gallery galleryid-6010 gallery-columns-3 gallery-size-thumbnail'><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon landscape'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/gallery_192-scaled.jpg'><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/gallery_192-150x150.jpg\" class=\"attachment-thumbnail size-thumbnail\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon portrait'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/gallery_195-scaled.jpg'><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/gallery_195-150x150.jpg\" class=\"attachment-thumbnail size-thumbnail\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon landscape'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Screen-Shot-2020-02-09-at-20.12.16-928x699-1.png'><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Screen-Shot-2020-02-09-at-20.12.16-928x699-1-150x150.png\" class=\"attachment-thumbnail size-thumbnail\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>Basi, Boira and their new home (c) VCF<\/p>\n<p><strong>Positive results\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/pt\/2019\/05\/30\/second-year-of-releases-in-the-europe-s-latest-bearded-vulture-reintroduction-project-in-spain-s-maestrazgo-region\/?fbclid=IwAR3wmyhlv1jNqpbhb2Omc5bpx3yD4m9O24IQ1x3IUw3NoMVbBLBwZilvRX0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> three of the four birds already released in the Maestrazgo region as part of the project remain in the area<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Al\u00f2s and Amic, the two birds released in 2018 are continuing their progress into adult life well, exploring the region.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The project also translocated Esera and Otal, two adult birds, from the Pyrenees in December 2018. Of the two, only Otal remains in the Parque Natural de la Tinen\u00e7a de Benifass\u00e0 as Esera quickly returned to the Pyrenees, after their release last year, and has been there ever since.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Connecting populations of Bearded Vultures in Spain<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Maestrazgo region of Spain was historically a breeding site for Bearded Vultures and while there are no resident population the area is regularly visited by individuals released in Andalusia. The project to reintroduce the species to the region began in 2018 with the aim of establishing a wild breeding population that will bridge the populations in the Pyrenees and Andalusia, similar to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/pt\/life-projects\/gypconnect\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">LIFE GYPCONNECT<\/a>\u00a0project in France that connects populations in the Pyrenees and the Alps. Over the course of the project captive-bred birds wil be released in specially constructed hacking sites in the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.parquesnaturales.gva.es\/es\/web\/pn-tinenca-de-benifassa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Parque Natural de la Tinen\u00e7a de Benifass\u00e0<\/a>\u00a0and in a unique experiment the team, in close consultation and collaboration with us here at the Vulture Conservation Foundation, will translocate adult non-breeding or floater birds from the population in the Pyrenees to the Maestrazgo region to test how effective this method is and if that has an effect on the reproductive productivity of the Pyrenean population. As part of the project the released birds will be monitored by fitting them with GPS transmitters to better understand how the move around the region and to encourage movements of birds to the region a series of supplemetary feeding stations will be created.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The project is led by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gva.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Generalitat of Valencia<\/a>, in collaboration with the Autonomous Communities from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aragon.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arag\u00f3n<\/a>\u00a0e\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.gencat.cat\/en\/inici\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Catalonia<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mapa.gob.es\/es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fish, Food and Environment<\/a>\u00a0and the us here at the Vulture Conservation Foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Our Bearded vulture captive breeding manager, Alejandro Llopis Dell, presenting one of the vultures (c) VCF The Maestrazgo region welcomed two more Bearded Vulture\u00a0chicks.
