There was first much excitement as she traveled across Belgium and Holland then onto Germany at the beginning of May. But\u00a0now she is heading north, first Denmark, then Sweden and now on Tuesday 21 May she is currently in Norway.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who is Cinereous Vulture Br\u00ednzola?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There was much excitement at the sighting of Br\u00ednzola in Holland, making her the fourth Cinereous Vulture to be spotted in the country. But where did she come from? Br\u00ednzola is a\u00a0three year old wild-born bird who was rescued in the city of Palencia in northern Spain in 2016 soon after fledging the nest after becoming exhausted and spent\u00a0two years\u00a0in a wildlife rehabilitation centre in Valladolid.<\/p>\n<figure><a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/\/content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/1557521169.jpg\" alt=\"Br\u00ednzola being tagged and marked by the GREFA team ahead of her release back into the wild in October 2018\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Br\u00ednzola being tagged and marked by the GREFA team ahead of her release back into the wild in October 2018<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In October 2018 Br\u00ednzola was released back into the wild in Huerta de Arriba, Burgos in the Spanish region of Castile and Le\u00f3n as part of the conservation project\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/proyectomonachus.grefa.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Proyecto Monachus<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/proyectomonachus.grefa.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0led by non-governmental wildlife organisation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grefa.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GREFA<\/a> to reintroduce the Cinereous Vulture to area, in between the Pyrenees and western Spain where most Cinereous Vultures live.<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-1' class='gallery galleryid-6121 gallery-columns-2 gallery-size-full'><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon landscape'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/gallery_258-scaled.jpg'><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1920\" src=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/gallery_258-scaled.jpg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/gallery_258-scaled.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/gallery_258-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/gallery_258-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/gallery_258-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/gallery_258-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/4vultures.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/gallery_258-2048x1536.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>Cinereous Vulture Br\u00ednzola in the\u00a0Huerta de Arriba, Burgos\u00a0during her first winter<\/p>\n<p><strong>From Spain to Holland<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/\/content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/1557521071.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>After spending her first winter after being released in the Sierra de Madrid, Br\u00ednzola was spotted near her release site at Huerta de Arriba, Burgos around 20 April 2019. She stayed a few days before she dispersed on a journey that would take her some 3,000km away from her Spanish home. She first moved to the Basque Country at the end of April before spending three days crossing the entire Pyrenean mountain range from west to its most eastern end, near Figueras, from where she crossed the border into France on 27 April.<\/p>\n<p>She then headed north to the Auvergne region and turning west to the Atlantic coast around the city of Bordeaux on April 30. Incredibly, she carried on northwards arriving in the Paris region on Monday 6 May spending the night in the Picardy region before crossing into Belgium on 7 May. Based on the movements of the three other Cinereous Vultures that have visited Holland Br\u00ednzola is likely to carry on her spring wanderings and we\u2019ll keep you up to date where her travels take her next.<\/p>\n<p>More photos of her recent travels can be found on <a href=\"https:\/\/observations.be\/soort\/photos\/293?from=2019-05-08&amp;to=2019-05-10&amp;sex=&amp;id_kleed=0&amp;os=1&amp;id_akt=0&amp;licentie=0&amp;only_rated=0&amp;only_approved=0&amp;type_foto=0&amp;maand=0&amp;page=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the birding site observations.be<\/a>\u00a0.<\/p>\n<p>The team at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grefa.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GREFA<\/a> have been monitoring her movements closely and were concerned that she had not eaten for several days. However, colleagues all across her journey from organisations such as France\u2019s LPO have checked on the bird. The Cinereous Vulture European Endangered Species Programme co-ordinator and Vulture Conservation Foundation Advisory Board member <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zooscience.be\/en\/our-team\/marleen-huyghe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marleen Huyghe, who is based at the Belgium Zoo Planckendael,<\/a> has also been working closely with ornithologist colleagues on the ground to monitor the bird\u2019s health.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update 11\/05\/19 &#8211; And now in Germany<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure><a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/\/content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/1557522654.jpg\" alt=\"Br\u00ednzola captured resting in a field in Germany (c) Hans Pohlmann\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Br\u00ednzola captured resting in a field in Germany (c) Hans Pohlmann<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Vulture Conservation Foundation Management Board member based in Holland, Hans Pohlmann left early in the morning on Friday 10 May to locate the bird, but sadly missed her as she had continue her journey, this time heading north east and entering Germany. traveling over 100km in just a few hours.\u00a0Hans Pohlmann\u00a0carried on his search and photographed her in Germany. And it seems she is not alone, there are reports of another Cinereous Vulture in Germany at the moment suspected to be also from Spain.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Update 21\/05\/19 &#8211;\u00a0A Scandanavian adventure<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/\/content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/1558416913.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>After heading into Germany\u00a0Br\u00ednzola traveled north to the Germany&#8217;s\u00a0Baltic\u00a0coast traveling over 250km in just five hours. The journey of 50km took her over the Strait of Fehmarn, connecting the Bay of Kiel and the Bay of Mecklenburg in the western part of the Baltic Sea between the German island of Fehmarn and the Danish island of Lolland. During the flight\u00a0Br\u00ednzola left Germany at a good altitude but descnded quickly according to the GPS transmitter and was at real risk of falling into the water, but probably thanks to\u00a0atch an upward air stream makes it to the Danish coast at a good altitude of 433m.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Denmark, Sweden and Norway<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/\/content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/1558417553.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>After making it to Denmark\u00a0Br\u00ednzola traveled into Sweden\u00a0she stopped to spend the night near the town Almhult. On Wednesday 15 May she she continued\u00a0her journey, flying over the city of V\u00e4xj\u00f6, 40 km north of this Almhult.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/\/content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/1558418196.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>On Thursday 16 May she was in the surroundings of the population of Ludvika, about 120 km from the Norwegian border, at an equidistant point between the capitals of Sweden and Norway, Stockholm and Oslo and after spending the night in a forest near the Swedish town of \u00d6je she heads northwestward, crossing the border into Norway on Saturday 18 May.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/\/content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/1558418137.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Loc<br \/>\nal ornithologists over the weekend 18 and 19 May managed to observer her and reported she was in good health and even spotted her feeding, on a reindeer, possibly the first record of a Cinereous Vulture feeding on a reindeer!<\/p>\n<p>We look forward to where her travels will take her next.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Proyecto Monachus<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/\/content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/1557522024.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Starting in 2007\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/proyectomonachus.grefa.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Proyecto Monachus<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/proyectomonachus.grefa.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0<\/a>aims to connect the large natural populations of Cinereous Vultures existing in the center and south of the Iberian Peninsula with other smaller populations in the north. Part of the project was the <a href=\"https:\/\/proyectomonachus.grefa.org\/recuperacion-de-las-poblaciones-extintas-de-buitre-negro-en-el-sistema-iberico\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reintroduction of the species to the Reserva Nacional de Ca\u00e7a de Boumort in the pre-Pyrennees<\/a> in the Spanish region of Catalonia. Since the project began releasing captive-bred birds and rescued birds from elsewhere in Spain the population has grown to 50 resident birds and 16 breeding pairs which have successfully raised 20 young birds in the last 10 years. The project has also been monitoring the movements of birds in the region by fitting them with GPS transmitters, managing supplementary feeding stations and working with local groups, livestock owners and hunters to raise awareness of the species. A <a href=\"https:\/\/proyectomonachus.grefa.org\/recuperacion-de-las-poblaciones-extintas-de-buitre-negro-en-el-sistema-iberico\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">second reintroduction project began in the Sierra de la Demanda in the Burgos<\/a> of the Spanish region of Castile and Le\u00f3n to further connect the populations in southern Spain to the now reintroduced northern population, returning a breeding population to a region where it has been extinct for over 50 years.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/\/content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/1557521886.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cinereous Vulture Br\u00ednzola spotted in Belgium (c) Wouter Van Gasse The silhouette of Europe\u2019s largest vulture is a familiar sight to ornithologists in Spain but a much rarer sight across northern Europe, that was until Br\u00ednzola, a female Cinereous Vulture, was spotted travelling through northern Europe.
