On February 20th Pascal Borreill, a train driver, saw the body of a bearded vulture on the railroad tracks near Villefranche de Conflent. The bird – with full adult plumage – was in perfect condition. Staff from the French railroads then warned Olivier Salvador of the Federation of Catalan Nature Reserves (FRNC), which in turn alerts the people involved in the monitoring of this endangered vulture in Europe: the network springs into action.<\/p>\n

The corpse was then collected by Gilles Boumaza, an official agent, and frozen on the premises of the National Hunting and Wildlife Association (ONCFS) in Prades, before its transfer to Ariege where it will be autopsied. The next day Ang\u00e8le Pialot, from ONCFS-Ariege, gets the dead bearded vulture at the Puymorens pass from her Catalan colleagues and carries it to the veterinary laboratory Tarascon. There it is X-rayed and autopsied by Dr. Lydia Vilagins, a veterinary specialist in raptors. Many samples are taken and sent to a specialized laboratory (VetAgro-Sup Lyon) for eco-toxicological analysis. The results are still pending.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately the vulture, a male, was a breeding bird, and the next day Claude, registers the reproductive failure of the local breeding pair. Bearded vultures are rare because they do not start breeding until reaching the age of 8 years. The loss of a breeding individual is a blow to the department Pyr\u00e9n\u00e9es-Orientales, where only one other pair is now breeding.<\/p>\n

The bearded vulture is the subject of a National Action Plan in France, led by the Ministry for the Environment since 1997 and coordinated by the DREAL Aquitaine Limousin Poitou-Charentes. The Pyrenean part of this action plan has been delegated to the League for the Protection of Birds (LPO), which relies on a huge network of technical partners, and observers, some of which were involved in this incident. The bearded vulture nests again in the Pyrenees-Orientales since 2002, following multiple actions implemented under this Plan, with the support of local communities, the French state and the European Union.<\/p>\n

Un gypa\u00e8te mort pr\u00e8s de Villefranche de Conflent\u00a0!<\/b><\/p>\n

Le 20 f\u00e9vrier dernier, Pascal Borreill, conducteur de train, d\u00e9couvre le cadavre d\u2019un gypa\u00e8te barbu sur la voie ferr\u00e9e, \u00e0 hauteur de Villefranche de Conflent. L\u2019oiseau en parfait \u00e9tat \u00e9tait un adulte caract\u00e9ristique\u00a0: couleur ventrale orang\u00e9e, immenses ailes gris-ardois\u00e9 et barbiche noire.<\/p>\n

Un membre de la SNCF pr\u00e9vient alors Olivier Salvador de la F\u00e9d\u00e9ration des R\u00e9serves Naturelles Catalanes (FRNC) qui alerte \u00e0 son tour les personnes impliqu\u00e9es dans le suivi de ce rapace montagnard menac\u00e9 de disparition en Europe\u00a0: le r\u00e9seau se mobilise.<\/p>\n

Le cadavre est recueilli par l\u2019agent de l\u2019environnement Gilles Boumaza et congel\u00e9 dans les locaux de l\u2019ONCFS \u00e0 Prades, le temps d\u2019organiser son transfert vers l\u2019Ari\u00e8ge\u00a0o\u00f9 il sera autopsi\u00e9. L\u2019agente Ang\u00e8le Pialot de l\u2019ONCFS-Ari\u00e8ge r\u00e9cup\u00e8re le cadavre au col du Puymorens o\u00f9 ses coll\u00e8gues catalans l\u2019ont amen\u00e9, puis le transporte jusqu\u2019au laboratoire v\u00e9t\u00e9rinaire de Tarascon. L\u00e0, il est radiographi\u00e9 et autopsi\u00e9 par le Dr Lydia Vilagines, v\u00e9t\u00e9rinaire sp\u00e9cialiste des rapaces n\u00e9crophages\u00a0pyr\u00e9n\u00e9ens ; des pr\u00e9l\u00e8vements sont faits et envoy\u00e9s au laboratoire sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9 en \u00e9co-toxicologie V\u00e9tagro-Sup de Lyon. Les r\u00e9sultats de ces recherches sont en attente.<\/p>\n

Malheureusement ce gypa\u00e8te \u00e9tait un oiseau reproducteur, un m\u00e2le, et sa mort co\u00efncide avec le constat d\u2019\u00e9chec de reproduction du couple reproducteur local effectu\u00e9 par Claude Gautier de l\u2019association Cerca Nature, le lendemain de la d\u00e9couverte du cadavre\u00a0!<\/p>\n

Les gypa\u00e8tes sont rares car ils ne se reproduisent g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement pas avant l\u2019\u00e2ge de 8 ans, un \u00e2ge tardif que tous n\u2019atteignent pas. La perte d\u2019un individu reproducteur est un coup dur pour le d\u00e9partement des Pyr\u00e9n\u00e9es-Orientales, o\u00f9 un seul couple niche encore actuellement.<\/p>\n

Rappelons que le Gypa\u00e8te barbu fait l\u2019objet d\u2019un Plan National d\u2019Actions men\u00e9 par le Minist\u00e8re en charge de l\u2019Environnement depuis 1997 et coordonn\u00e9 par la DREAL Aquitaine Limousin Poitou-Charentes qui en a d\u00e9l\u00e9gu\u00e9 l\u2019animation pyr\u00e9n\u00e9enne \u00e0 la Ligue pour la Protection des Oiseaux. La mise en \u0153uvre des actions est r\u00e9alis\u00e9e avec le soutien d\u2019un r\u00e9seau de partenaires\u00a0techniques – dont la FRNC, l\u2019ONCFS, l\u2019ONF, Cerca Nature, la RNR de Nyer et le GOR dans le 66. Le gypa\u00e8te niche \u00e0 nouveau dans les Pyr\u00e9n\u00e9es-Orientales depuis 2002 gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 de multiples d\u2019actions mises en \u0153uvre dans le cadre de ce Plan, avec le soutien des collectivit\u00e9s locales, de l\u2019Etat et de l\u2019Union Europ\u00e9enne.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
