{"id":6430,"date":"2015-10-29T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2015-10-29T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4vultures.org\/blog\/africa-vulture-crisis-confirmed-six-of-africa-s-11-species-of-vultures-have-seen-their-global-status-worsen-in-the-latest-update-of-the-global-bird-red-data-list-with-4-now-critically-endangered\/"},"modified":"2015-10-29T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2015-10-29T00:00:00","slug":"africa-vulture-crisis-confirmed-six-of-africa-s-11-species-of-vultures-have-seen-their-global-status-worsen-in-the-latest-update-of-the-global-bird-red-data-list-with-4-now-critically-endangered","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/pt\/blog\/africa-vulture-crisis-confirmed-six-of-africa-s-11-species-of-vultures-have-seen-their-global-status-worsen-in-the-latest-update-of-the-global-bird-red-data-list-with-4-now-critically-endangered\/","title":{"rendered":"Africa vulture crisis confirmed \u2013 six of Africa\u00b4s 11 species of vultures have seen their global status worsen in the latest update of the bird red data list"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>   4 species are\u00a0now Critically Endangered<\/p>\n<p> Vultures are the big losers in the 2015 update of the IUCN red data list, announced today \u2013 out of the 40 bird species that are now classified as having a higher risk of extinction in the 2015 Red List, six are vultures.<\/p>\n<p> Three of the vulture species &#8211; <strong>Hooded Vulture<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.birdlife.org\/datazone\/speciesfactsheet.php?id=3372\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Necrosyrtes monachus<\/em><\/a>,<strong>White-backed Vulture<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.birdlife.org\/datazone\/species\/factsheet\/22695189\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Gyps africanus<\/em><\/a> e <strong>R\u00fcppell&#8217;s Vulture<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.birdlife.org\/datazone\/species\/factsheet\/22695207\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Gyps rueppellii<\/em><\/a>,passed from globally Endangered to Critically Endangered, due recent declines in the continent, while the <strong>White-headed Vulture<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.birdlife.org\/datazone\/species\/factsheet\/22695250\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Trigonoceps occipitalis<\/em><\/a> went directly from Vulnerable to Critically Endangered. <strong>Cape Vulture<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.birdlife.org\/datazone\/species\/factsheet\/22695225\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Gyps coprotheres<\/em><\/a> e <strong>Lappet-faced Vulture<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.birdlife.org\/datazone\/species\/factsheet\/22695238\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Torgos tracheliotos<\/em><\/a> transited from globally Vulnerable to globally Endangered<\/p>\n<p> This comes after a number of leading vulture scientists published <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/pt\/2015\/07\/21\/proposed-status-changes-for-six-species-of-african-vulture\/\" target=\"_top\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a paper<\/a> documenting widespread declines in vulture populations across the African continent.<\/p>\n<p> The main threats killing African vultures are indiscriminate poisonings due to the use of poisoned baits to kill elephant (for Ivory) or against predators, and the use of vulture body parts in traditional medicine \u2013 a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/pt\/2015\/08\/19\/vultures-in-west-and-central-africa-threatened-by-trade-for-bushmeat-and-fetish\/\" target=\"_top\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">scientific paper<\/a> found that 29% of the vulture deaths recorded continent-wide could be attributed to this trade, most prevalent in West Africa. In the last few years at least ten massive vulture poisoning incidents have been recorded, which resulted in the deaths of at least 1,500 vultures across six southern African countries \u2013and this is only the tip of the iceberg. Most cases go unreported, and it is thought that the uncontrolled and widespread use of poison across the continent will continue to play havoc with Africa\u2019s vultures.<\/p>\n<p> A sad day for Africa\u2019s vultures \u2013 the VCF hopes at least that this change of status will now work as a rallying call for decision makers, protected area managers and conservationists to do more \u2013 much more \u2013 to save these magnificent animals.<\/p>\n<p> (Photos below A.
