{"id":6475,"date":"2015-08-11T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2015-08-11T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4vultures.org\/blog\/fly-esperanza-fly\/"},"modified":"2015-08-11T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2015-08-11T00:00:00","slug":"fly-esperanza-fly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/pt\/blog\/fly-esperanza-fly\/","title":{"rendered":"Fly Esperanza fly!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> First bearded vulture born in the wild in Andalucia this century flew off its nest after 117 days \u2013 a great tribute to the long term effort by a huge number of people, including those in the photos below!<\/p>\n<p> Esperanza \u2013 the female young bearded vulture named by the public has fledged from its nest in the Sierra de Cazorla \u2013 the first breeding in the wild of this species in southern Spain for 32 years, and the direct result of a reintroduction projects started 9 years ago.<\/p>\n<p> Esperanza is the offspring of Tono, a male released in the first year of the reintroduction project in 2006, and Blimunda a female released in 2010. Esperanza has been tagged with a GPS tag, that will enable researchers to follow its movements (see <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/pt\/2015\/07\/13\/first-bearded-vulture-to-be-born-in-the-wild-in-andalusia-in-the-21st-century-marked-with-gps-and-rings\/\" target=\"_top\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p> The fledgling of this bird &#8211; only nine years after the first bearded vultures were released back into Andaluc\u00eda, is a huge success in an extraordinary project, and a just reward to the many people that worked so hard to bring back this species to southern Spain, and particularly to the Junta de Andaluc\u00eda, that since day 1 has invested politically and financially in this project.<\/p>\n<p> The bearded vulture was widespread in the mountains of southern Spain until the 40s, but intense human persecution and widespread poisoning cause it to disappear from southern Iberia. The last confirmed breeding took place in Cazorla in 1983, and in 1986 the last adult also disappeared. In the end of the 80s a number of conservationists, led by the regional government, started to establish the first contacts (with the then precursor of the VCF), to try to start a reintroduction project \u2013 the photos below\u00a0are from the first ever visit to Austria, where the first ideas and strategy were developed.<\/p>\n<p> Releases in Andalusia started in 2006, after the Junta, and Fundacion Gypaetus, established locally to manage the project, initiated an ambitious conservation programme, mainly focussed on minimizing the endemic tradition of poisoning the sierras to control predators.<\/p>\n<p> So far a total of 39 birds have been released there, including 6 this year.
