{"id":7042,"date":"2018-05-29T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-05-29T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4vultures.org\/blog\/first-bearded-vultures-released-in-new-reintroduction-programme-in-spain\/"},"modified":"2018-05-29T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2018-05-29T00:00:00","slug":"first-bearded-vultures-released-in-new-reintroduction-programme-in-spain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/pt\/blog\/first-bearded-vultures-released-in-new-reintroduction-programme-in-spain\/","title":{"rendered":"First bearded vultures released in new reintroduction programme in Spain"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/4vultures.dev.reformat.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/1527629012.png\" \/> <\/figure>\n<p> Following the successful <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/pt\/bearded-vulture-reintroduction-maestrazgo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">public launch of the bearded vulture reintroduction programme in the Maestrazgo region<\/a> of Valencia, Spain at the end of April, the first releases of captive-bred young bearded vultures are set to take place today (Wednesday 30 May) at 12pm.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> The first-ever nestlings to be released today in the region will come \u2013 as do all the bearded vultures from our reintroduction projects &#8211; from the <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/pt\/our-work\/captive-breeding\/bearded-vulture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bearded Vulture captive-breeding network\/European Endangered Species Programme (EEP)<\/a>, we coordinate.\u00a0 The young vultures will be released with the \u2018hacking\u2019 method, where weeks old nestlings are put in a naturally-looking platform in the wild, from where they will fledge in a few weeks.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/4vultures.dev.reformat.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/1527628890.jpg\" alt=\"Hacking site built near Tinen\u00e7a de Benifass\u00e0.\" \/><figcaption>Hacking site built near Tinen\u00e7a de Benifass\u00e0.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p> A hacking site was built in a protected area near Tinen\u00e7a de Benifass\u00e0. Both chicks will be put together in an artificial enclosed surrogate nest where they will be fed (without any human contact) and looked after from a monitoring point in the distance. As they near the age of fledging they start to exercise the wings, until they finally jump out to their first flight.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> The Maestrazgo region was historically a breeding site for bearded vultures and is regularly visited by individuals released in Andalusia. This new reintroduction programme aims to establish a wild breeding population to bridge the populations in the Pyrenees and Andalusia, similar to the <a href=\"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/pt\/life-projects\/gypconnect\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">LIFE GypConnect<\/a> project that connects populations in the Pyrenees and the Alps.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> The project is led by the Generalitat of Valencia, in collaboration with the Autonomous Communities from Arag\u00f3n and Catalonia, the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fish, Food and Environment and the VCF.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> It marks another step towards one of our big objectives \u2013 the restoration of the bearded vulture across its former range in
