{"id":7146,"date":"2019-01-29T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-01-29T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4vultures.org\/blog\/a-2018-survey-of-griffon-vultures-in-andaluc%c3%ada-reveals-the-population-continues-to-grow-across-the-region\/"},"modified":"2021-03-17T12:27:08","modified_gmt":"2021-03-17T12:27:08","slug":"a-2018-survey-of-griffon-vultures-in-andaluc%c3%ada-reveals-the-population-continues-to-grow-across-the-region","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/4vultures.org\/pt\/blog\/a-2018-survey-of-griffon-vultures-in-andaluc%c3%ada-reveals-the-population-continues-to-grow-across-the-region\/","title":{"rendered":"A 2018 Survey of Griffon Vultures in Andaluc\u00eda reveals the population continues to grow across the region"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With a growth rate of around 3 percent since 1999 the population of Griffon Vultures has increased to 3,339 breeding pairs across the Spanish region of Andaluc\u00eda in a survey carried out by the government of the autonomous region, Junta de Andaluc\u00eda\u2019s Ministry of Environment and Territorial Planning.<\/p>\n<p>This population shows an 11 percent increase compared to a survey carried out in 2014, showing a steady growth rate of 4 percent since that survey was carried out.<\/p>\n<p>Across the region the Griffon Vulture is present in all provinces except Huelva and across all the regions the species was present showed an increase with the exception of Cordova and C\u00e1diz has the highest number of pairs accounting for two thirds of the Andalusian population. Favouring the rocky outcrops of the mountain ranges, colonies of the species have been found primariliy in the westernmost tip of the Penib\u00e9tica mountain range (Alcornocales, Sierra de Grazalema, Strait of Gibraltar and Zaframag\u00f3n) as well as the central and eastern Sierra Morena and the Subb\u00e9tica mountain range.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Efforts to fight illegal poisoning in Andaluc\u00eda<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The continued growth of the population of Griffon Vultures has been attributed to the region\u2019s approach to tackling illegal wildlife poisoning. The use of poisoned baits is a widespread practice throughout Spain and Europe, despite being banned since 1983, to control large predators of game and livestock species. However, since 2004 the Junta de Andaluc\u00eda have been leading the world with a strategy to fight the issue, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.juntadeandalucia.es\/medioambiente\/site\/portalweb\/menuitem.7e1cf46ddf59bb227a9ebe205510e1ca\/?vgnextoid=3a436dccaa537310VgnVCM1000001325e50aRCRD&amp;vgnextchannel=631cb2c42f207310VgnVCM2000000624e50aRCRD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> the Andalusian Strategy against Poison<\/a>,\u00a0which has included investing in anti-poisoning dog units, investment in law enforcement,\u00a0 Agentes de Medio Ambiente, that secure the enforcement on the ground and developed pioneering work on toxicology on the regional reference lab to enhance the forensic investigative techniques. This has seen a 55 percent drop in the reported cases of poisoning.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Griffon Vultures in Spain<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/vcf.dev.reformat.co\/content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/1548769089.jpg\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Spain is home to 75 percent of the world\u2019s population of Griffon Vultures and 90 percent of all Griffon Vultures in Europe are found in Spain. This population in Spain has grown rapidly over the last 40 years when in 1979 it was estimated that there were around only 3,249 breeding pairs in the whole of the country.
