The bearded vulture reintroduction project in the Alps is one of the most successful wildlife comeback stories in the world – last year there were 49 territorial pairs, and a population of about 250, after extinction in the begging of the 20th century. Reintroductions started in 1986, and gthe first breeding in the wild occurred 11 years later (1997), and the population has been increasing ever since.
Year after year many people, organisations, and government agencies work together on the different aspects of this project – from the captive breeding to the releases of young, and doing the essential monitoring of the species in the Alps. The Parco Naturale Alpi Marittime each year publishes a summary newsletter about the project called “Infogipeto” (in Italian), giving a very good overview what was achieved during the last 12 months. This year they teamed up with Stelvio National Park to produce another issue, full of information and data. VCF staff have written several of the articles therein.
