Engaged for a long time in the conservation of bearded vultures, the Prince of Monaco has sent us today a powerful message to celebrate the release – for the first time ever, of two young bearded vultures in Corsica, a momentous event that hopeful will mark an upturn in the plight of this endangered species on that Mediterranean island.
The release of two young bearded vultures raised in captivity happens today in the valley of Niolu, in the northern Corsican mountains.
This restocking operation, coordinated by the Parc Naturel Regional de Corse (PNRC), and the VCF, with funding from the Fondation Prince Albert II de Monaco, the Barcelona Zoo Foundation and also the Collectivité Territoriale de Corse and the French government, is part of an action plan to save the extremely endangered Corsican island population of this species. The number of pairs on the island has recently dwindled to four.
