The 2015 annual bearded vulture meeting – an annual conference of experts on this species, organised by the VCF – will take place this weekend in Corte, Corsica, and will gather 80+ conservation managers, researchers, scientists, vulture overs and government officials from more than 10 countries.
This year´s meeting – co organised with the Parc Naturel Regional de Corse, and partly sponsored by the Fondation Prince Albert II de Monaco will serve as a discussion forum to analyse the latest news from the different projects, exchange best practice, plan new activities and confirm conservation strategies (see programme below)
In the meeting we will certainly review all the reintroduction projects coordinated by the VCF that aim to restore the bearded vulture in Europe, from the Alps (34 pairs in 2015, a new record), to Grands Causses (where we will invest a lot in the years to come to facilitate a bridge population between the Alps and the Pyrenees), and Andalucía (first breeding in the wild this year, after extinction in the 1980s!), but we will also hear about the situation of bearded vultures in south Africa, hear the best practice from some great conservation projects happening, and will focus on the Corsican bearded vulture population
Next year the VCF and the Parc Naturel Regional de Corse will also start a restocking project to save this highly threatened population, and we will use this meeting to engage with Corsican authorities for this.
We will also be visiting a bearded vulture territory on the island, as well as the future hacking site from where the young bearded vultures from the captive breeding network coordinated by the VCF will be released from next year.
