A brief history of the centre
In 1986, Bearded Vultures disappeared from the skies of Andalusia. The establishment of the Guadalentín Centre in 1996 marked a crucial turning point in reversing this loss. The first Bearded Vulture chick hatched at Guadalentín over 20 years ago, in February 2002. Today, more than 100 chicks have hatched and survived at this facility, and 27 individuals are permanently housed there. The Centre is now one of the leading producers of Bearded Vulture chicks within the Bearded Vulture Captive Breeding Network, contributing to reintroduction programmes in Spain, France, and the Alps. Thanks to techniques like double adoptions and natural rearing, our expert staff ensure that young vultures develop the wild behaviours essential for survival. Over the years, the Centre has consistently expanded and improved its outcomes. During the 2023-2024 season, 12 eggs were laid, and 11 chicks hatched—the highest number recorded at Guadalentín to date.
A special tour
Guadalentín is located in the province of Jaén, specifically in the Sierras de Cazorla Segura y Las Villas Natural Park, in a privileged area at almost 1,300 meters of altitude. The centre is typically closed to the public due to the species’ sensitivity, particularly during the breeding season. Due to the sensitivity of the species, particularly during the breeding season, the centre is typically closed to the public. However, special visits can be arranged outside of this period, with limited capacity, to minimize any potential disturbance. This event marks one of the special exceptions.
During the guided tour, you will meet our dedicated team, who will share fascinating insights into the Bearded Vulture captive breeding, the release of vultures into the wild, and the ongoing conservation efforts critical to the species’ survival. You will also have the chance to observe Bearded Vultures in their enclosures and learn more about the entire captive breeding process, from egg laying to chick rearing.
