Two permanently wounded griffons travel from Portugal to France for captive breeding

Through VCF facilitation, two unrecoverable (permanently wounded) griffon vultures travelled recently from a wildlife rehabilitation center in the Algarve, Portugal (managed by RIAS) to the Bioparc Doué la Fontainein France, to enter the griffon vulture captive breeding programme there. In the past several griffons born in this zoo have been released back to the wild in several reintroduction or restocking projects. One of the griffons has a severe wing fracture after colliding with a wind farm, while the other has a feather growing malfunction that prevents it from flying.

You can see a short report on this on the Portuguese TV (in Portuguese), in which the role vultures play in the ecosystem, and also the main threats, notably the poison, are discussed.
